Thirteen years ago, the cult classic The World Ends With You (JPN: すばらしきこのせかい Subarashiki Kono Sekai trans. It's a Wonderful World) released on the Nintendo DS in Japan to critical acclaim. It has spawned an iOS/Android remake in 2012 with a special teaser featuring a brand new character hinting towards a continuation of the series, a now-defunct free-to-play mobile game, a Nintendo Switch port in 2018 that added a brand new chapter called "A New Day" which further teased a continuation of the TWEWY franchise, and an anime coming in 2021.
Despite the countless album releases with brand new remixes of classic hits, an abundance of new merchandise, even the formation of a band named after the infamous Def Märch (JPN: Death March) from the game, the announcement of the next installment continued to elude us.
That is, until now.
Square Enix has announced NEO: The World Ends With You for release on the Nintendo Switch and PS4 in Summer 2021.

This is just my Marketing side speaking, but it's possible that Square Enix's Marketing re-examined TWEWY as a brand. That would entail a plan, meaning that they must have enlisted a couple of objectives, and I'm sure one of them was "broaden audience" (get to more people).
This is where the Animé comes into play and the decision to make Neo multiplat instead of just Switch exclusive, even though the franchise has been loyal to Nintendo machines (NDS, NS).
With that said, it's possible that Square has high-hopes for TWEWY as a brand and Neo and the Animé may just be a part of what could be a rich future for the series.

"Matsunae" seems to be the combination of something with "seedling". There are some plant metaphors with this girl.

The plaid hurts me but MAN even though I have some reservations I'm just unbelievably happy that a sequel even exists, even if I don't end up enjoying it, it's absolutely amazing to see TWEWY get such a push considering it's relative obscurity

From a marketing standpoint, yeah, that makes sense. TWEWY may not be the benchmark of jRPGs, but it’s a reasonable success that could yield a lot of profit if capitalized properly. I respect that.

TWEWY doesn't need to grow very big, just big enough to be able to stand on its own legs. I feel like the Animé, 3D visuals, voice-acting and Action RPG are gonna elevate it from niche-ish to something on par with mainstream, or just plain mainstream.

I definitely feel like TWEWY has made a very smooth transition from sprites to full 3D models. I like the changes they've made to the art style without straying too far from the original. Rindo certainly intrigues me as the new protagonist.

Well yes actually. February 23rd is a rumored date for the English release. Or at least a version with English releasing in Asian territories.

Like it's stylized urban presentation in the UI, the simplified presentation of other people and anime-esque models. But the association probably comes from me not having been exposed to that many AA games.

I wanna see that old idea of Reaper games being played in other cities around the world come back. Instead of multiple weeks in Shibuya to pad out the game, send the players to like Cairo & Paris.

I mean, to be fair, TWEWY came about because CoM existed. They used the latter as a foundation, and while it's an independent series on its own right, I guess you can say...KH is TWEWY's "mom", like how Bouncer was KH's "eccentric uncle/absent dad," although that honor could also go to Final Fantasy...

Yep xD I imagine Shiki is now a very popular designer. What happens with Players after they survive the game is that they go on to become amazing designers, inventors, musicians, and whatever their focus is because they are proven to have high Creativity which allows them to prosper in the world.

That was really good! I think they missed out on some other minor analyses, but it was great. I don't agree with the KH3D thing mostly because TWEWY already established their are many alternate realities of Shibuya. KH's "Shibuya" is just one of those and I'd say Quadratum is another such thing built from the whole worldliness concept introduced in KH3's secret reports. I do think there is merit in analyzing Rindo's dialogue about Shibuya being gone, though.
I wonder if they'll port FR to the PS4/5 before this drops. Man, I love the original, but I want to see the the additional shines for myself, and I am Switchless. I am kindof surprised to see this getting a PS4 release considering how Nintendo-exclusive TWEWY has been minus phone ports (and 2.8 ReMIX ?). I know it probably has more to do with expectation that new generations of fans are going to get caught up to speed from the anime, but let's do make it happen, Square.

Yes. Whether your Joycos drift or not, whenever you hit the Home Button, say, you were playing Final Remix, and your mom cals you to help her with the groceries. I personally hit the Home Button to "pause" the game and not hit the pause button itself.
Point is, whenever you hit the Home button, you NEED to resync the Joyconn/s with the game.
This was especially annoying to me because I played 2 Player Mode by myself, hahahaha
I found it worse that if your switch was in handheld mode and you put it in TV mode then try to take it back to handheld mode, it doesn’t know what you are trying to do and forces you to use a Joycon. You have to completely exit from the game and restart to be able to re-enter handheld mode.

God, it looks like the game wasn't heavily beta tested, or just didn't care.
That said, a proper port would do the game justice.

Figured one was coming soon. Two SE titles are releasing which means NEO’s marketing cycle should begin in April to coincide with the anime’s release.
