Utada Hikaru's new song Oath (JP) / Don't Think Twice (ENG) will be used as the theme song for KINGDOM HEARTS 3! We also get a chance to see Riku and Mickey's new outfits and learn a stunning revelation involving Way to Dawn!

I am crying. I didn't expect us to get a preview! I thought for sure that would be something they would keep exclusive to the event.
The song isn't as powerful as Simple and Clean or Sanctuary for me, but I think a lot of that has to do with nostalgia for me. This one feels much more calm and even a little sad. Like saying hi to an old friend you haven't seen in a while.

I like what I heard. I expected it would be more similar to Sanctuary than to Simple and clean but it's ok. Besides, it's not the whole song.
I also like the new clothes, Riku looks good, even though I must say I'm not a fan of how "flat" clothes appear to be, if it makes sense.

But I very much dislike this song for KH3. Please tell me what you like/dislike about it and if you have listened to other songs by Utada Hikaru.
The clip we got may be from the credits version of the song and not the opening of the song or vise versa (GOD FORBID). Please remember this.

for feedback on improvement I really hope they work harder on Mickey's facial expression. That mouse can't always look happy, it kind of ruins the impact of the scene.

I think I like the English version more? Its hard to tell, maybe cuz I can understand the lyrics more clearly lol. I like Simple and Clean more than Hikari but like Passion more than Sanctuary so I guess I just keep alternating lol.

Yeah I did notice this, it could just be sort of is default face since he wasn't saying much? Like the KH3 version of "fish face". Or they just didn't finish the scene yet lol, cuz his face is higher quality than 0.2, but yeah now he seems less expressive.

This is my second favorite song behind Simple and Clean and has WAY more replayability than Sanctuary. Not calling Sanctuary bad but it’s not a song I listen to as much.

This is my favourite track by her, and I'm glad there's a genre shift to a more R&B style. The Electro feel of Passion and Sanctuary feels very 2000's, and as much as I loved those tracks, sticking to Electro wouldn't really work for this title in my honest opinion.

She's been past that for a couple of albums now. I won't deny I was kind of hoping to hear something more experimental from her since my favorite of her albums is still Exodus, but hell if every time she gets her R&B groove on I don't succumb in short notice.

Same, when I heard "kingdom" I was like there's no way she just did that haha.
I don't knowww though I've been listening to both versions back and forth and I just love both of them too much. "Oath" is so somber and layered with these big themes she likes to mull over on fate and endings and how to just be, while "Don't Think Twice" has that pop romance vibe going for it which she also excels at. And I just want both of them forevermore. I'm completely polyamorous when it comes to my KH themes lol.

Not just the Xehanort saga but probably Sora’s story arc as well. I don’t know how after this game they could possibly continue with Sora.

Yup, if one changes the hair color that literally is Noctis. I think it's the hoodie though that covers his length of hair in the back. His his hair reaches little more than shoulder length.

I enjoy the rawness of the recording.
As for the trailer, the juxtaposition of transitioning from Monsters to the Maleficent and Pete scene is incredible; Maleficent and Pete look like hand-drawn animation in a 3D space, and of course Monsters looks just like the film.

You can definitely tell Oath was written first as it sounds like Don’t Think Twice’s lyrics are trying to fit the melody but are a bit “rushed†if you know what I mean. Imo the songs aren’t as good as Forevermore or Anata but they’re still really good!

I didn't like the song, or the stuff we can hear anyway, obviously is not the full song. In Japanese is OK I guess but in English.. there is something about the way Utada is singing, is not licking with me. The melody and the rhythm is not clicking with me either and it sounds more like a song for the credits than the opening.
I guess I will wait for the full song and how is implemented in the game to pass final judgment.

Oh my Riku finally got a design I like I'm happy! Ahhh and monster Sora looks so good too phew, was worried about that. So adorable. Oh man. Not a fan of the new song on first listen, but it'll probably grow on me, it's not bad either. Everything looks so good, there's Vani?? I'm actually more hyped than I expected. Nice. One thing I didn't realize until watching the trailer multiple times (because sight was always somewhere else) is that both Mickey and Riku now have the same checkerboard-pattern in their clothes as Ventus and Roxas have on their wristbands.

I have a feeling that Riku abandoned his "Way to Dawn" Keyblade because he has finally found a way to reach "dawn" and is leaving it to show someone else the "way".
So...new Keyblade gonna be "dawn" style somehow? Haha I dunno...
Considering the dawn part of the keyblade was kind of angelic I assume his Keyblade might be sorta angel wingy looking. Kinda looking forward to it.

The new song reminds me so much of the songs from Utada's "Fantome" album! Which isn't a bad thing, because I didn't dislike even one song on that album lol. It really gives me a sort of bittersweet vibe. Like, I can really feel the 'conclusion' in this song. I really like what I heard tbh; it made me emotional, especially while watching the compilation of clips from the latest trailer. I just really wonder if this is going to be played in the opening or not? Either way, I can't wait to see the full opening with this song (or whatever variation/remix of it there'll be)!

I haven't read the other comments yet, so I don't know if this has been said, but I'm gonna make a big guess here.
We will get an explanation for how Riku got the Soul Eater and it's through time travel shenanigans.
Riku's "other self" is referring to his KH1 self, who is in Xehanort's Org. XIII. Remember that in DDD, Riku refers to the young black-coated Riku as himself.
KH1 Riku will find the broken Way to Dawn, and "fix" the weapon. Restoring the bat wing but losing the others.
When KH1 Riku goes back to his proper time, he'll forget what happened but the Soul Eater stays because heart.

Personally I think the lyrics are fine. The way she expresses and conveys her singing is fine. However, the slow drum beat is sort of ruining the moment. It's a slow tempo song, which sort of indicates "This is it. This is the end" but the song is hardly anything to get "excited" for.

Agreed. Oath/Don't Think Twice is not up-beat and the piano notes indicates the end of the trilogy + side stories.

I definitely like the song but it pales in comparison to Simple & Clean and Sanctuary. This song sounds perfect as an end credits song, but as the main theme of the game itself? It's not upbeat enough in my opinion. I like how it fits the sense of finality that KH3 has, but again, as the theme of the entire game, I'm not totally digging it the way I do with the previous two songs.

No it won’t. I can easily imagine an up-tempo version of these songs. It would be like Michi which has very sad/longing lyrics but an upbeat tempo.

I was initially thinking as it started to play that it sounds entirely different from what Kingdom Hearts themes were. But as it progressed I feel in love with the song. It is going to be great hearing the full version.

Riku's new look is so sharp. Makes him seem really mature. So a Keyblade can break? I don't remember seeing that except for Data Sora's, but his was fake. A powerful, magic sword tied to your heart that breaks seems like a big problem. How do you get another? Is his old one supposed to be the original Soul Eater from KH1 or something totally different?

I'm already predicting Riku is going to do some self sacrificing thing with his quote "for my other self" meaning whatever comes out of his sacrifice like possibly a Nobody.
IDK I'm probably sounding very fanficy and wrong but something about the word "other self" made me think of the Nobodies, how Roxas was Sora's "other self".

The lyrics suit an ending where all the hurt characters are brought back. All they ever dreamed of was being together and happy "for a lifetime."
The more I think of it, with Riku being in the realm of darkness at the time, I think it probably is Riku Replica. I'd like to see RR with his own life, back with Namine.

I cried the song is so beautiful and I think, so far from what we hear, it’s truly fits.
It is very possible that this is the end credits version since remix versions being the intro is a theme in the games. however, I this is the intro I am not disappointed at all. I know the other two have been upbeat, but when I think of what all of these characters have been through and emotional and at times heartbreaking journey of the story characters, This new somber sound is, in my opinion, 100% fitting and truly reflects what has happened up to this point. Add the fact that this is the conclusion of the arc, I think it’s perfect. Like saying Goodbye to an old friend after an amazing journey.

The original of Passion (Sanctuary) was the opening version... but the original of Hikari (Simple an Clean) is actually the slow ending version. The opening version was a remix.
We will almost definitely be getting 4 versions of this song, between remixes and two languages.

The fact that they had a clip of Sora getting the Rapunzel world's Keyblade at the point when they lyrics were "People who say things they don't really mean" made me realize how perfect Tangled fits with KH3's story. Those lyrics apply to the Organization/Xehanort's repeated lies about not having hearts of course, but also Mother Gothel's lies to Rapunzel.
Thinking about it though, Monsters, Inc. actually fits the theme of lies, too, with Waternoose's attempt to backdoor harm children to keep scream supplies up. BH6 also has Tadashi's mentor pretending to be supportive of Hiro's invention when he caused Tadashi's death and only wanted Hiro's invention for his own use. *spoilers* [SPOILER]Frozen's story of course begins with lies, about Elsa's powers being dangerous and her needing to hide them her entire life, not to mention Hans' lies to Anna.[/SPOILER]

my problem if then if there a upbeat version of the song i think it ruins the whole song i get there need to be upbeat song but looking back at simple and clean and passion end song those were already upbeat to begin with i just don't think making oath a upbeat song a good idea

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I personally think Hikari's lyrics best suit the theme of the games... but Passion fits perfectly musically, to me. Chikai is going to have to grow on me to hold a candle to either IMO

So happy that she really is making a new one for KH3. I love Simple & Clean and Sanctuary/Passion - but I wouldn't want them to re-use it again; especially for KH3.

I didn't like the song that much to be honest. Sanctuary and Simple & Clean are way better in my opinion. Oh well, it will probably grow on me. And the full version will probably be better.
I haven't read the other comments yet, so I don't know if this has been said, but I'm gonna make a big guess here.
We will get an explanation for how Riku got the Soul Eater and it's through time travel shenanigans.
Riku's "other self" is referring to his KH1 self, who is in Xehanort's Org. XIII. Remember that in DDD, Riku refers to the young black-coated Riku as himself.
KH1 Riku will find the broken Way to Dawn, and "fix" the weapon. Restoring the bat wing but losing the others.
When KH1 Riku goes back to his proper time, he'll forget what happened but the Soul Eater stays because heart.
So you're talking about a "time loop"? Is that possible with the time travel rules Nomura has established in Kingdom Hearts? Honestly, I need a refresher for the millionth time about how time travel works. I still have trouble with it <.<
I always assumed Riku got the Soul Eater from Maleficent. But if the time travel thing is true then it means that Riku went to the Realm of Darkness at some point. And I thought that Riku crash-landed on Hollow Bastion in KH1. So Maleficent brought him there? Why would she do that?

More than likely the credit version. It might get a more electronical remix. Although they might just go a different route and keep this as the opening. Maybe the cinematic could be more on the emotional side, and not action based.

This is both similar and yet vastly different from Passion. The speaker feels like the other person is like a home or a safe haven to them, but also exactly the very thing that can break them apart. Even so, when the other sleeps those fear go away because they know at the end of the day they are together. No matter how many times the other person breaks them apart, they will be put back together again.
But at this moment, I can't help but acknowledge its existence.

They don't think anybody needs to judge their relationship and there shouldn't be any expectations. All they need is the two of them and more of these days where they are being honest and open to each other.

plaintb and the menu trailer versions of Hikari/Simple and Clean were in official trailers and commercials, not the version at the end
Same with Sanctuary/Passion, I didn't know about -after the battle- until I played the game or watched it.
So there's no proof this is the credits version right now.

KH3's marketing is so vastly different from previous games that there is really no use trying to use examples of the past on it anymore.

Makes sense, we can't use the past songs anymore as a example, for now we don't know the version we got.
Going to be a lot of replace opening song videos in the near future, time to find myself in the future to see how it went

Oath/Don't Think Twice are definitely good and not trying to call anybody out but the creators have said that this game is supposed to be darker than the others and the somber vibe of Oath and Don't Think Twice help set the mood.

So I see people complaining about the lyrics not feeling like they relate to Kingdom Hearts. Let me put a little perspective on earlier songs.
This is a song about two people still feeling insecure about their relationship together. The speaker has felt alone for a long time, and when they met this person it felt like some of that loneliness was leaving. The speaker feels like this person is their light that finds them when they are lost in the dark, and regardless of fearing having to take big steps like meeting each other's family or figure out their future, they decide that that should enjoy the moment with each other.
The meaning behind Simple & Clean is pretty similar to Hikari, if not a bit more straightforward about it.
This is a song about being nostalgic of the past. The speaker and the other person are moving forward with their lives and the speaker fears they will drift apart and begin to walk on different paths. They miss how happy they were together in the past and still love them deeply, so they look back to the past fondly. They remember the happy times where they could just be together, but they need so much more out of their relationship right now.
This is both similar and yet vastly different from Passion. The speaker feels like the other person is like a home or a safe haven to them, but also exactly the very thing that can break them apart. Even so, when the other sleeps those fear go away because they know at the end of the day they are together. No matter how many times the other person breaks them apart, they will be put back together again.
It's not a lot to work from, but this is a clear continuation from the previous themes.
This is about finally wanting to take THE big step in a relationship even with the lingering doubts. This is something of a culmination of the speaker's feelings since Hikari, especially since that was the early part of their relationship. The speaker still feels insecure, but they don't want to let that hold them back anymore. They want to be with this person forever. They don't think anybody needs to judge their relationship and there shouldn't be any expectations. All they need is the two of them and more of these days where they are being honest and open to each other.
Again, this is about taking that next huge step in a relationship. The speaker has wondered how they have been able to live with people who could lie to them and say things to them just to hurt them for so long when the answer has been there in front of them the whole time. This other person is exactly the person they want to spend forever with and when asked, of course they'd want to take this step. The speaker loves this person very much, but if the other person intends to hesitate about this even after asking, the speaker would rather be ignorant to it and just stay in this blissful moment.
It's a beautiful trilogy (hexalogy???) of songs. They all tie together. Early relationship fears, the difficult middle where anything can happen to hurt each other, and the final union.
And for people who are still upset even after this long-winded explanation and continue on the trite "but its a marriage song" argument, please remember this series has its main musical theme as "Dearly Beloved", the first thing the ordained minister says in a god damn wedding ceremony.
I am very glad to see I'm not the only one who pieced this together, and I didn't realize that it also worked in the Japanese versions of the songs as well. Once you realize that the three songs form a trilogy about marriage, and then you remember the main theme of the entire franchise is called "Dearly Beloved" it's like mind blown.

It was released beforehand and Hikki performed it live. People speculated that KH2 would have a bad ending because of how slow it was. History repeats itself.

Meaning aside (Utada's KH songs are mostly irrelevant to the games lyrically imo) I love the theme so much. Utada sounds better now than she ever did. I love that KH3's theme song is in 3/4. (Or 6/8?)
I love the asymmetrical stuff going on with the beat as well.

"Hatsukoi", her new single, last song to be released prior to the album if I'm not mistaken. So, so beautiful. This makes me even more excited about Oath.

I saw the music video on iTunes before the single so I downloaded it and had like a religious experience watching it haha. This is going to be such a fantastic album. I don't even mind that half of it is already out, I haven't gotten sick of a single track yet. <3
