As Kingdom Hearts 3's release approaches, fans have been wondering when we'd finally see Kairi, the Princess of Heart, in all her splendor. Her new outfit had been teased in Union X's 3rd anniversary artwork, but she had yet to make an appearance in any trailers for the long-awaited conclusion in the Xehanort saga.
However, it appears she may soon be making an appearance, as her new outfit was datamined in the latest Union X update by @Roboloid. Featuring a pink and black dress, black ruffles on one side of her skirt and plaid on the other, with thick belted boots, Kairi will soon be ready for action!

I don't hate it as much as I do the other plaid designs, but I have to see how it looks in KH3 before I can fully critique her outfit.
Will dish out the jewels for both outfits though! Chirithy outfits need to come first, then it's saving for these.

It gives me a little bit of Lolita vibes, the frills at least. I like cute frilly things myself so I clearly like it. The plaid isn't too much either. I echo the sentiment that skirts aren't really made for combat but I guess a lot of character designers don't really care about that anyway lol.

I have a few gripes but I'll have to wait until she is shown in KH3 to solidify them. For all we know, this could be an edited version of her outfit, doubt t tho.

The length of the skirt and how much it covers the legs will make her outfit a hit or miss. Of course it can still end up looking great regardless..it's hard trying to visualize how it'll look based on X's artstyle.

It looks cute, I never really liked how short her skirt was in previous games so I'm happy her skirt will be long. Perhaps there's a slit at the side to allow her legs to move freely since it does look a bit impractical for combat.

Looks good so far, but yeah, the longer skirt isn't very practical looking. Then again, this is Kingdom Hearts. I'm not sure most of the original character designs in the franchise to date have been all that practical either. It's all about that "Rule of Cool" factor.

I'm actually the opposite on this. I LOVE asymmetrical skirts as they give a lot of personality to things.

Like many have already said....yeah the long skirt seems very impractical for fighting. It doesn't need to be super short, but based on observation and guessing, I think having the skirt slightly above the knee would do just fine.

I think it's really cute. It at least fits in with the other new outfits that have been shown off so far. I just need to see it actually on Kairi in KH3's engine before I can say for sure if I love it or not though.

Interesting that the Lion accessories are on the “dress as the KH3 characters†side. I’m not too wild about the possible idea of that world returning, but still. I bet it would be beautiful in UE4.

Yeah, the skirt isn't surprising but still a bit disappointing. I can't fully know what I think of the outfit till I see it in KH3's style, but it kinda reminds me of KH2 Aerith. Also +1 for loving asymmetrical anything!

June is The Lion King’s anniversary so UX is celebrating with avatar and spirit parts.

We hope so too, but he regularly posts his datamines on reddit and in a discord channel, both where SE community rep Glacie regularly interacts with members of the community. Glacie hasn’t had any issues with his datamines yet (though this is a bigger beast), but considering Sign got a C&D over some random medals years ago, maybe this will tip her over the edge?
Still, she reveals some details she isn’t suppose to in the discord (the one I know about is what they actually use to choose the winners of the screenshot contest) so it’d be kinda hypocritical for her to shut Roboloid down, even if she’s just doing her job.

Ah gotcha! I thought the whole graphic was something he datamined. That’s good though. They could follow the sequel I guess, but it might be kind lackluster in comparison to other possible worlds and I don’t think KH3’s gameplay would be conducive to a world that is restrictive like Pride Lands.

Yeah, considering the Lion King stuff, this does seem like a June thing.
Also wanted to expand on my previous post and say that Glacie is wonderful and it’s great to have a community rep, however knowing that she hasn’t made a fuss over Roboloid’s stuff before and reveals some SE internal details in Discord, it would be disappointing to the community as a whole if Square Enix Japan shut him down now.

I really like the new outfit! The only peculiar detail I notice is that in the skirt, one half of the frilly material is black and the other half is plaid. Looks a bit odd, but also an interesting design. I'm excited to see it rendered in UE4, and I assume we'll be seeing it soon if these are coming to UX in the near future.

I like the buttons and the pockets, hate the ruffles and of course the plaid: in this case it's even worse because it's only plaid on one side, wtf? The boots are boring and in desperate need of some color, but the hood looks better than I thought it would.
Obviously with the level of detail afforded by KH3's engine it might end up being really nice but right now it's pretty disappointing. I don't think Nomura gives a lot of thought to Kairi's outfits tbh, this is basically just a longer version of her KH2 dress with some added black accents (...and the plaid).

This is where it's edging towards problematic for me though, I'm a big fan of dresses and actively hoped Kairi would be rocking either a skirt or a dress, but this particular design doesn't look far off from something patched together and mass produced for the "young anime girls" section of your local Ross department store. It's borderline infantalizing and I'm not comfortable with that. That said, everything in Ux is kind of chibified so it's possible it'll look a lot more age-appropriate in KH3 proper. With both Sora and Riku's costumes designed to convey a more "mature" theme, having Kairi stand between them as the "little girl" with the key is just...not a great message to send.

I get your point, but I think dresses are cool and fun and fantastical, and if Kairi is feminine and princessy, not in a diminutive way, but in a powerful, earnest, and confident way, I personally feel it charming and appropriate to the franchise.
Disney has shown us time and again that princesses can be cool, independent, and powerful without sacrificing their beautiful and creative outfits. Kairi running around in a skirt that's probably too long is silly for sure, but isn't that the magic of Kingdom Hearts? Sora can wear big baggy parachute pants and kick ass, and Riku can transform into an evil version of himself with a mesh suit and a skirt on... Wearing a hood protects you from darkness! It's all impractical and silly, but it's stylish and presents an image that's true to the character.
If looking like a princess is true to Kairi's character, then it might be fun to explore that side of her. She's got a lot of responsibility and import, so she should look like the leader she is.
This is why I'm not ashamed to admit I hope a tiara that protects her from evil is on the way as well.

I agree with you 100%, but it's the double standard this reinforces which bothers me. Girls/women have to carry out this delicate balancing act of presenting their assertive character without ever losing that "feminine virtue" heavily associated with youth and girlhood and purity (all represented within the stereotypical "princess" persona), but boys/men aren't constrained by that set of factors when considering their presentation, and that's really on display here. We've seen this dominant color shift in both Sora and Riku's clothing towards subdued blacks and greys, and if I didn't like that before I really don't like it now in how it sets them apart from Kairi aesthetically. If Sora was still sporting bright yellows and reds and Riku was steeped in greens and blues I would feel more confident in how their shared status coheres, but the impression Nomura sends with these outfits (intended or not) is that Sora and Riku have grown into young adulthood while Kairi is still just a girl, and that's a bad dynamic to go with from the outset.

But you're not accounting for the fact that one set of cartoon aesthetic logic is consciously or unconsciously gendered while the other is not. All of the Organization members wear a standard cloak; it's purely functional within the fantastic framework of the story. If Larxene had been depicted in CoM wearing very selectively applied latex and leather straps and eight inch heels as the only exception to the Org. dress code that would obviously have triggered some concerns (not least of which that is definitely a Marluxia look first). That's a bit of the feeling this dress gives me about Kairi; her femininity is being used to frame her role and presentation in the story, rather than her owning her femininity as a matter of character.
But at any rate I'll press pause on my judgments until the KH3 renders come our way. How Kairi is written is obviously more important than what she wears, I just think it's worth recognizing how this dress is informative as to her character's direction.

I guess I'll hold off on too much judgment until we see the official KH3 renders of her. Maybe it'll look a bit different when we actually see her wearing it.
I'm kind of... meh about the outfit. I hoped to see something closer to her KH1 outfit. This feels a little too close to her KH2 outfit, which felt like just a pink monochromatic tube.
The Lion King stuff is adorable, though. Especially Zazu.

I don't think the skirt is that much longer than her previous dress. The belt part is probably right under her bust. Also the dress doesn't appear to be skin tight like the previous one. I hate that one side is pleathed and the other side isn't... it's just nothing you do in fashion, it's not trendy.

I think it's just the art style. Also, it's not actually on an example avatar, so that might be distorting how long it seems as well as the placement of the black panels. I'd say it's probably the same length, maybe a little longer.
But I don't know about the skin tight part. Her KH2 dress in KHUX doesn't like skin tight either and flares out at the bottom. They're very similar in shape.

Less practical than a miniskirt? Long skirt is better than short skirt for fighting imo. Reduces the chance of "flying kicks gone wrong," if you catch my drift.

Oh! That looks to be an adorable outfit for her, especially as one of the 7 Princesses, but I agree, it' not very combat ready-like. But guys, I don't think the skirt is as long as you think. Especially when you compare the two different versions from KHUX. I would say this means we can definitely expect to see our Kairi at last in next months KH3's news feed. Alright! ^o^

Not my taste, personally, because I'm not really a big fan of the color pink. But... it technically fits Kairi's role. After all she is a princess and a character that belongs to Disney, so it makes sense, that her outfit is more closer to that type of role.

Tbh, it's about what you'd expect from the source for this character. I was hoping we'd move away from the KHII pink, though. Still, it may look a little better in actual KHIII form, depending on what materials they decide to emulate it could look pretty cool, like if the pink skirt was made of (faux) leather.

I’m excited to see the look on her. I’m really glad they gave her combat boots. I hope that means she might actually have a more physical approach to combat to contrast with Aqua’s magic focus. I don’t want her to be essentially an Aqua carbon copy.

I like the black in her pink. And I honestly love the how the skirt has different texture. It gives a bold look that I really dig. The boots are good but I wouldn't mind some more detail. Aside that, this is probably my favourite outfit for Kairi thus far in the series.
Also how tall is Kairi compared to Sora?

Oh, I really like this outfit. I'm glad Riku and Kairi have been improved from KH2.
It would be nice if TAV, Namine, Roxas, Axel, etc. got new outfits, too, but I guess it would be weird since they can't exactly change clothes when they're dead/asleep/lost in the darkness.

jeez, people, try wearing a skirt in the style of KHII Kairi and your movements are horribly restricted by that kind of miniskirt unless you want to offer hundreds of panty-shots and full-ass views to those around you.
In that type of skirt I can't even spread my legs comfortably. Or run comfortably. Or kick a classmate comfortably.
Source: I TRIED. KHII Kairi's skirt style is a perfect example of the very word 'impractical' and movement restrictions. Guys, please, open your eyes. This fluffy KHIII dress will be very smooth to move in, she'll (hopefully) kick ass like 2B in her wide-lower-opening black dress

See, I think it would be impractical for running if it were below the knee. Kairis KH2 skirt was still flowey despite how short it is.
Below the knee(mid calf or lower) is where it may start restricting movement. Especially when running, as you may have to hold the skirt up to run. Flowey skirt at the knee seems very optimal. I know this from experience.

I personally don't think the dress will be below the knee. It can't be, it can't imagine the developers choosing this kind of design for a young once-a-tomboy [strike]forever a tomboy[/strike] keyblade-wielding princess. And with this in mind, I expressed my thoughts. That's it. Knee-length with that huge wide fluff opening is very comfy and allows a lot of movement without getting in the way.

The top is fine but the dressy part looks kinda odd being all big and poofy like that. Of course, part of it could be due to the art style, but it still seems too long for Kairi so I went and made a couple edits

I think many associate the mental image of a long(ish) skirt with tripping over it, enemies grabbing it or it getting stuck on something.
And while that can happen (although this skirt isn't exactly a Cinderella gigantic gown either), it's a fact as DarkGrey and others have stated that it is much more preferabile to a skin-tight skirt that would immediately restrain your legs as soon as they shift from natural position.
It's physics, really. If you stop the leg movement at the very origin of the articulation there's not much the other can do about it.
Fighting with a skirt is still a fantasy setting thing (but so is everything that isn't armor or combat gear), but I feel like they chose a good lenght for at least plausible scenarios.
Especially since as others have also said, UX's design might be portraying it a bit more... flowery than it actually is.

I did this in 10 minutes so it's not that great and probably a little inaccurate but, yeah.
I kept the belt in the second to compare. In KH2, her belt/pouch rests low on her hips, so the belt is definitely under her bust and those black panels end at her hips. They're basically the same length too, if KHUX is accurate at all.

The second edit looks really good! That's how to use asymmetry correctly: it reminds me of some of the dress spheres in FFX-2, and it helps the ruffles feel less tacked on and childish.

Raccoons' comparison confirms what I hoped the moment I saw the image- that they've ditched that awful salmon shade from KH2. No longer will she look like sushi with zippers~<3
That said, my personal hope for the KH3 version is that they lengthen the skirt to about halfway between the knee and where her KH2 outfit stopped. That would be about the perfect length, to me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this. Top section is cool with the hoodie and arm holes, but the bottom half looks too long. I also think the ruffles(?) should be plaid all the way around.
And the boots? Totally different from everything she has ever worn. If you look at the progression of her shoes, these boots don't match up with anything. Her shoes would have some color of purple, but it looks like that has been ditched. If you look at Sora's shoe progression, he has retained yellow in his shoes despite design changes, but Kairi doesn't retain hers.
But boots can have significant meaning. For Kairi, this design choice could mean a pair of sturdy, yet fashionable boots would compliment her journey. These (combat) boots would definitely serve purpose if she plans on wielding the keyblade.
Also, it just became apparent to me that the buttons are the new zippers. RIP ZIPPER FAD.

It was a WIP version of the dress. Who knows how many changes it went through since then. It seems the buttons weren't there yet.

To be fair, it wasn't supposed to happen like this. These had to be extracted from the game by dedicated fans with the skills to do it.
Granted, they should have seen that coming because people do this all the time for mobile games, but they just put them there so it was ready after the actual reveal (probably to have them on sale the day after) along with all the promotional stuff for The Lion King.

I find it Ironic people are complaining about the skirt being long, when we dont know how long it'll be on her since our only source of reference on how it'll sit on her body is currently for a chibi design. Honestly I can see it either coming down around her knees: either on them, or just above them. The frill and 'poof' of it all sort of fits given that shes a Princess of Heart, and that really does look like a dress a princess might wear to combat in a fantasy setting.
Then again they could be taking ques from RWBY and its a full blown combat-skirt, like Ruby and Weiss's dresses.

Ah, it's like people will never be satisfied. There's the ones who are disappointed by her not wearing pants, there are people disappointed by her color scheme, there are people disappointed because they wanted a dress but NOT AS LONG (probably the same people who formerly complained that her dress was too short), there are people disappointed about her boots??
I like her outfit. It keeps the color scheme that KH2 established. The boots are amazing and while a pop of pink in them would've been great, they look super comfortable and practical, not to mention they emphasize her tomboyish ways. The dress is cute, the plaid isn't overbearing. I like how it might poof out - it allows for a bigger movement range. Also thank you @raccoonscity for the comparison between KH2 and KH3 Kairi on an actual avatar model - I didn't expect her dress to pass her knees and it looks like this might be its length. I think it's great to allow for modesty and movement all the same. And also yes, she's a princess, she can pull off frills. We had Aqua with her sashes that hinted at a dress before and her movements look amazing and graceful, I can only imagine how awesome and pretty Kairi's movements might look like while still being fully functional and practical. I've seen people compare her to Queen Minnie in design and I agree - it's also really cute seeing how Sora was designed with Mickey in mind and if that's truly it, it would be a really cute detail and throw back to KH1!
And I seriously love her boots. Whoever thinks badly laced up chucks are better for fighting than combat boots should sit down and think again.

If you compare the two, you can see that that is the same outfit from the union x anniversary artwork. I love the design. It blends Disney princess with Kairi's signature style. Also, as far as practicality, a dress can be just as practical as pants if cut correctly, and I think Kairi will be a keymage anyway.

In terms of practicality, as someone who plays Dynasty Warriors and its many spin-off games, i've played as female characters in lose flowy gowns, trench coats, mermaid-dresses, Cinderella style gowns, kimonos, and all sorts of things. In a game thats all about Disney characters fighting off the darkness the idea of her fighting in a dress seems impractical? WUT? since when does practicality have anything to do with fantasy. And even then, as i mentioned before, RWBY has this thing called a combat-skirt which female huntresses use all the time.
And speaking of skirts, honestly? I wouldn't mind if it had a bit more 'poof' too it, would certainly fit with her being what is essentially a Disney Princess. Maybe something similar to Ruby from RWBY:

Honestly I would prefer something more like this, in terms of skirt design/function, over it hugging her body. I remember hearing about in the japanese version of KH2 so many people were taking photos of the underside of her skirt, they flat out removed her pelvis in the western release, and in KH2FM. So giving her a dress with poof would prevent that from happening again.

But I think I like this even without comparing it to her former outfits. The buttons are my favorite part, but I also like the belt and how the ends of the skirt are split into two sides. The boots are cute, too. I guess I don’t really mind her outfit being pink? I would say this outfit is mature, in a feminine way. Not that she needs to be overly feminine, but the character has been that way from the beginning, so it would almost feel out-of-character not to be at this point. Short-short skirt or knee-length skirt, I don’t think it would make any difference to her battle potential.
I hope she gets a new Keyblade in this game. I really don’t mind if they give her something that’s flowery and ornate, just nicer-looking than the Keyblade in KH2.

I agree with you 100%, but it's the double standard this reinforces which bothers me. Girls/women have to carry out this delicate balancing act of presenting their assertive character without ever losing that "feminine virtue" heavily associated with youth and girlhood and purity (all represented within the stereotypical "princess" persona), but boys/men aren't constrained by that set of factors when considering their presentation, and that's really on display here. We've seen this dominant color shift in both Sora and Riku's clothing towards subdued blacks and greys, and if I didn't like that before I really don't like it now in how it sets them apart from Kairi aesthetically. If Sora was still sporting bright yellows and reds and Riku was steeped in greens and blues I would feel more confident in how their shared status coheres, but the impression Nomura sends with these outfits (intended or not) is that Sora and Riku have grown into young adulthood while Kairi is still just a girl, and that's a bad dynamic to go with from the outset.
Gotta say, by the end of this paragraph, you really articulated your point well. Felt like you were reaching a bit at the start, but I totally agreed with you by the end. I'd still like to wait to see the outfit in KH3 to properly judge how it appears and how proportionate it is to Kairi's body, but you're right about how Sora and Riku's outfits feel more mature and evolved whereas Kairi's does give off a feeling that she's being kept in the "princess" cage.

Thanks for taking some time to read it and give your thoughts! Like you, I'm reserving my final thoughts on it for the official KH3 engine reveal, which I think is more and more likely to take place at the Orchestra. Dress aside, I'm really excited for Kairi to finally get some time to shine.

This is a great example of how her shoes ought to look imo, and I like the hairstyle this artist gave her too. Although if she does have a bob and bangs for her official haircut, I think that'll look gorgeous as well.

But how is it so drastically different? I will agree with you that her KH2 design makes a 180 compared to her KH1 design and I understand that people might be upset about that. But her current design is actually a very logical evolution of her KH2 design while incorporating the KH3 elements (buttons, plaid). Her shoes are the most different thing but they follow the color pattern of Sora's and Riku's shoes and are boots like Riku's. They could have added a touch of pink to incorporate them better, but all in all they seem like a better choice than badly laced up lavender chucks. Riku and Sora have the benefit that they had more outfits and their changes are more subtle, but even there we have the drastic change from white-red KH1 Sora to prominently black with a few accent colors KH2 Sora.

She kept a little white in form of her undershirt (like Riku - he adapted white during KH2). Pink might give the connotation of somebody being more girly, but she fought (albeit very little - thanks Nomura -.-) in a pink outfit already and now has combat boots to go with it. If anything, while not with the color scheme itself, she goes back to her roots with the practicality of her outfit. Definitely more practical than her white shoes with the open heel.

Okay, so after looking at the design and fanart of it more, some of my opinions have changed. First of all, I think it would've looked really pretty if Kairi had Recon's edit 2 outfit with some shorts or something. It would probably have been too similar to Aqua's design though. I'm just not a fan of dresses in general. BUT, if it's more flowy and less tubey, I think it'll look great on her. I still hope this dress is a bit longer than the KH2 one.
Also, I agree the boots are a bit basic, but I'm just happy she's wearing combat boots at all! Maybe they'll look better in the actual game.
As for her hair, I'm personally hoping they keep the anniversary artwork one (shorter with straight bangs) but if not, I can't really imagine any hairstyles they would go with that I wouldn't like. UNLESS it's a rehash of her KH1 hair. I mean, that was cute and all back then, but I'd rather see something new.
Oh, and I said I liked the asymmetry, but now that I've seen fanart, I think it looks weird. Unfinished, almost. If the things on her hips followed the same plaid-no plaid pattern it would have looked a lot better imo. Oh well.
The events are less than 3 weeks away but I feel like time is passing so slowly... I can't wait to see Kairi rocking this outfit!!

Let's just say she wore something closer to everyday's outfit back then; now it looks like she wants to look like a cool princess/loli of some sort (yeah, I get the point, but I wouldn't be so sure if it really is it). The outfit still reminds me of a very young herdsgirl a little bit, she only needs that big hat they wear >_< (I honestly don't know if it's the right terminology...)

I see that a lot of people like the top half of her dress so not the bottom, so giving her pants with plaid pockets might have been better. Just to avoid having too much pink and so it's not so uniform. As it is, I hope her outfit looks a little more layered.

A dress in the right style will increase your mobility. The thing about moving is that it makes it very easy for the dress to flail around and, well, show what you don't want shown. Which is why I hope Kairi has shorts under the skirt.
So in conclusion
Loose skirt- great for running or jumping. Not great for parkour type stuff.

I agree, I thought they fit her personality as kind of casual femme, just like her KH1 outfit. I'm one of the rare people who doesn't mind her KH2 costume in general, even the color shift was OK for me although it would have been better if they had stuck with her original scheme. For KH3, I was hoping they would stick with something a little understated, because I just don't think Kairi's character is conveyed well through the Princess aesthetic. She's more sarcastic and punchy with her dialogue (her first line has her calling Sora, the ~chosen hero~ of the Keyblade, a "lazy bum") and I just can't see her pulling that off in this, but I'm open to being proven wrong.
EDIT: Also, the modesty debate is so weird to me. Who cares if her panties are visible, it's just underwear? Half of FF women are in nothing but their panties and while I think there's something to be said about the message that sends I think it's equally weird to insist that Kairi should be dressed differently to avoid the appearance of pandering to creepy/curious hackers.

It would most likley be very minimal given today's technological advancements in games. While some clipping is bound to happen, it's an issue that is so small you probably wouldn't even notice it.
