Yesterday, Square Enix announced that Critical Mode will be arriving in Kingdom Hearts 3 as a free update for owners of the game. Details of the patch have been released by Square Enix, revealing a ton of quality of life updates being added to the game including the addition of checkmarks to allow you to know what you have synthesized in the Moogle Shop, item carry over including Keyblades into a new game file, and an additional 100 photo slots so players can take up to 200 photos with the Gummiphone.

Updates 1.04 and 1.05 will be releasing at different times today, but the scheduled release time for 1.04 in Japan will be 11:00am Japan Time.

I am so happy about the expansion of the photo slots. 100 was never enough.
Also the synthesis item checkmarks is going to make finishing the synthesis list waaaaay better. I would take a photo of what was in the list in the Gummiphone, then go back to the shop and compare my photo to what was in the shop. Then I'd make the appropriate edits on a spreadsheet.

But the best part is essentially what amounts to a NG+. I was lamenting having gotten Ultima but no way to use it. Now we can all use Ultima from start to finish like badasses. <3 Thanks Nomura, Yasue, Osaka Team, everybody who lost sleep and weekend time.

The option is always nice. I think everyone plays the game a little differently. I’ve noticed a lot of people play level one proud with no upgrades, no equipment, no food. That’s just crazy too me, I just got done with my second level one proud playthough and I use all those things. I did find myself thinking though that its kind of cumbersome that I have to collect Keyblade materials with the gummi ship every time I do a level 1 play though. The option to carry upgrades over will really cut down on the time I spent destroying asteroids. Though your totally right, doing that will especially make the beginning of the game much easier.

This pretty much. I'm looking forward to a fresh experience with the title gameplay wise, and I'm curious to see how they handled the enemy AI this time around. New game + is always welcome for me.
Finally. I can rewatch the cutscenes with Sora wielding each world's respective Keyblade, just like in the trailers! But first, I'm gonna wait for the story updates to finish and just do an Ultima Weapon run. I imagine all the Keyblades will be set to Lv. 0, but if my calculations are right, the Ultima Weapon will still outclass almost every Keyblade with its +8 Strength and +8 Magic; every Keyblade gets +5 in each stat from Lv. 0 to Lv. 10, alternating between +1, by my calculations. Unless, of course, a Lv. 0 Ultima Weapon is actually weaker than any of the other Lv. 0 Keyblades, and raises its stats by +2 to make it the strongest. Wouldn't that be a treat?
If New Game + applies to the other modes (which, I would think it would), I'm almost finished with my Proud Mode playthrough. I'd love to be able to start Crit on a high note.
Also, yeees to the checkmarks. I was buying / synthing two of everything (and only equipping 1), because I got so tired of toggling from this menu to that menu, just to see if I'd crafted/bought a specific item.
And yes, gd, there needed to be more photo slots. The Hidden Mickeys themselves take up 100 spaces. This will do quite nicely.
Glad this update is more than just a Critical update. I don't know if I would have wanted to hop back in otherwise.

The English release is today, but the time is unknown. It is likely to happen around the same time as the Japan release.
I’m really curious what the new abilities are. Sounds like a lot of work went into this update. I’m very thankful for the hard work the team must have put in. Must be hard to keep working on a game after release.

When you all go to see Endgame, please tell the theater staff that they are shit for working overtime shifts because they knew Endgame was coming out eventually so they should have kept the theaters clean anyways.

Actually, you know what. I am going to address this because that’s really shitty to say about the development team as thought they aren’t human beings just trying to survive themselves.
We know for a fact that this game went through substantial issues.
First the engine swap ate a year of development.
Second, they shipped out work to outside firms to have assets made so the team could focus on training and core gameplay development. When they got those assets back, they were trash so they spent at least a good year remaking them all in-house.
Third, they were working on an engine they’ve never developed for so they had to learn how to use it on the spot. You know how hard that is? Imagine you go to work one day and suddenly almost all of your knowledge for work is useless because a whole new system has been implemented. It takes at least six months of training or more to just gain a basic understanding of these engines on top of all of the middleware programs they had to learn to use.
Then you have demands from Disney and SE, Nomura changing his mind of various things, and probably the general dress of having to deliver a product that will please fans and shareholders, and you wanna invalidate the human factor from this to be mad that they didn’t include Critical Mode and other features at launch because they had ”years” to do it?
Call it brown-nosing all you want. We don’t get anything for just having some basic human decency, but at least we aren’t bitching in the face of very clear goodwill by the developers. They could have just washed their hands and moved onto the next project, or charged us money for this update.

It's just about appreciating other people's work, no one said that you have to like what they give us just because they worked hard on it.
Many people love to put Osaka Team down and I rarely see any praise when deserved (because we can't deny the improvements they made from BBS to KH3) and I don't think that wanting to promote appreciation for hard work is that outrageous.
It's just a shame the development for the game couldn't have been smoother. I don't if the outcome would have been drastically different or not, but they definitely had the potential and the passion to deliver a more solid product. I can personally relate to the feeling of having your full potential stifled by unexpected or unfair circumstances, so no matter how much I don't like the game, I can't not sympathize with Osaka Team's struggles.

Oh, please, Spocks. Don't spin this as discrediting the workers or even the entire body of the development cycle. It's a job, hard work the devs did for a AAA game, but any working stiff would understand that. Most working stiffs understand overtime, too. *raises hand*
My response is in context to the defensive nature that certain staff/users i n s i s t upon. We needed a disclaimer to be thankful, because people broke their back making a Critical Mode?? Sometimes it's like a giant megaphone over a prison yard choking out dissenting thoughts. "Guys, bow down to the golden calf, or it may not forgive you if you dislike this post-game content," that nobody asked them to kill themselves over the weekends for. No one wished that upon them. We don't need corralling or to be told how to feel. I'm sure most everyone is grateful for a free update.

You're free to cherry-pick my views on KHIII, Master Eraqus. I've praised the game for multiple reasons (and, man, let me tell you, I'm really laying into those no-good devs when I do). Whether you've been able to pick up on that or not is not my problem. If you even bothered with my earliest post in this thread, you'll see I'm actually excited for the changes. If I'm coming off as overly-critical, maybe it's in response to people being constantly told their "contrary" opinions are worthless.
So, I'm wondering if this will be an automatic update, or a DLC download that you'd have to manually download. Either way, I'm looking forward to trying this out tonight.

I hope the update lets us finally record the Ending Cutscenes, Epilogue and Secret Ending for Live-Streamers.

It took them over 1.5 years to unlock streaming restrictions for 2.8. I expect we'll be waiting at least as long, if not longer, for them to do so for KH3.

Quality of life improvements are improvements made for player accessibility and ease of play, like the added photo slots and checkmarks for synthesis.
Excited for critical mode! Will replay the game once I get the chance. However, disappointed from the lack of save slots :/

This is about not deciding how people should think or receive this news, and it's not a movement to cut down the SE staff. A statement could have been made about the labor intensive update without the "orders" to be grateful for it. No one was being ungrateful in the first place. If there's a disclaimer for folks needing to receive the effort well, there can be one for the opposite. It takes putting on your grown-up pants to just sit back and let people develop their own feelings on the matter. Why are we trying to produce or school thoughts on a place where (A) it's out of our control how and under what conditions the staff worked and (B) where everyone's ideas should have platform regardless? My only question regarding the patch notes is, does said enemy behavior changes only apply to critical mode? Caue honestly speaking, I've never been much a fan of crit from the jump and have only ever done it twice (first in BBS, second in 2FM) just for the achievement.

As I am sitting here literally receiving texts about our HO scrambling to add showtimes due to extremely inflated advance sales (our biggest multiplex is completely sold out WTF Dizney) and coordinating with a team of high schoolers and college students (who have to actually sleep at some point before Friday classes, did anybody point out this movie is THREE HOURS LONG and there are finals in two weeks???) to cover shifts I just want to say this is truth and it hurts. Also everyone pick up your trash, just this one weekend. Just do that.

Darkside only got one death on me, but it felt like I stumbled into a cheese method. Taking a sliding Large Body to the face for death number 2 was like "yeah, what did you expect?" but man... getting one-shotted by a Soldier for death 3. So I gotta try now, huh?

which I posted because the Osaka team have given up a lot to work on Critical Mode, listening to fan responses and criticisms. I was saying that, because of Critical mode dropping today, we should be appreciative of what they have achieved with getting this mode to us, especially under their circumstances including weekends.
You then took that and turned it around into the time it took to develop the game as a whole, and because you were personally let down then you feel like no one should be telling you to be appreciative of anything, which is fine because lord knows myself and others like Spock weren’t 100% happy with the game.

I think my main umbrage is seeing, almost systematically, a lot of the critiques and civil venting labeled as negativity to begin with. Everyone should be able to air out their sentiments without being typed at. That generates and even more toxic environment, I think. I certainly don't go into well-received review threads and knock 'em. I'm somewhere in the middle, regardless. So, when you said, "We should all be grateful.." I was triggered. Like, can we just not instruct people how to take this? Anyways, I'm sorry if I mistook your comment for what it wasn't.
Reloaded my Proud Save and got a new Item in my inventory called "Proof of Promises", I think it's for collecting all the Lucky Emblems because the description mentions collecting the luck from all the worlds.

I loved my lv.1 run on proud mode, made the equipment so very precious in contrast to every other game in the series lol.

It is possible but you’ll have to practice and train to do it. It would mostly be about learning how all of the enemy hitboxes work.
It’s very hard even when you level.

My only question regarding the patch notes is, does said enemy behavior changes only apply to critical mode? Caue honestly speaking, I've never been much a fan of crit from the jump and have only ever done it twice (first in BBS, second in 2FM) just for the achievement.
Still though, considering I've already done standard and proud, I suppose I might as well anyway
After reloading my proud save file just before the Keyblade Graveyard, I can confirm that it's universal. This is a plus for me. I may like challenges to a degree, but I'm no masochist. At least, thats how i see crit mode

The best thing about this ability is that it's not really an "extra challenge". You're trading AF for a guaranteed Formchange (hence "converter"), so you're not handicapping yourself but actually prioritizing one element over the other.

You know what they disappointingly didn’t change?? The ! Not vanishing from the menu when you have viewed something :(
It would be nice if the Gummi Ship could fly strait up and down. As is, you just stop turning upwards or downwards after a certain angle and crash into things.

I like Attraction Flow sometimes, but when it clogs up the reaction command queue with the Blaster one I get kind of annoyed. It would be nice to go through the game without the option even showing up, so I can focus more on battling with the keyblade.
If they ever consider touching the Attraction Flow feature again, I hope they just have its appearance be based on the difficulty you're playing. Beginner it shows up all the time, Standard it's regularly there, Proud is rarely, and Critical is very rarely (like one or twice per world).

Twilight Town and Toy Box were pretty fucking bad on normal Crit. Lots of deaths from off screen.
Olympus, Corona, and Monstropolis, however, have been so joyous and manageable that I almost feel as though my first playthrough was robbed of a superior difficulty. Gj Osaka, you're getting better every time you do stuff

I would prefer if WE could decide which Attraction Flow to use.
For example: Using Thunder based magic in big areas triggers the Shooting Ride Attraction Flow or using Water based magic in big areas triggers the Pirate Ship. Just like the command styles worked in BBS. Now it only seems random.

They could do that in an update, but I feel like they'll just leave it alone from here on. I feel like at best, they may just bring over the Converter to Proud, but other than that, they may be done with it.
I do think that it can definitely disturb the flow and feeling of battle at times, so that's why it's cool to be able to toggle it on and off for style. But it's still very much a feature that I'm glad they implemented. It adds some diversity to combat, but it's not for everyone and I think players should have the option to choose if they want to have that in their repertoire.

Only Keyblades and selfie poses, unfortunately.
Lucky Emblem photos and such don't carry over, but Proof of Promises does. My suspicion is that Proof of Promises unlocks the Secret Ending on a NG+ (regardless of any lucky emblem photos you take in the new file) so you don't have to recollect them all again on your new file.
