That's certainly vague.
Darkness: Your scheme was rather simple, Maleficent.
Travel to the world of the past, rewrite your own defeat, and gather the seven hearts of pure light. That's what you wanted.
Maleficent: ...
Darkness: However, changing the past is not so simple that any ignorant person can do it.
"You may travel back in time to a past in which a version of you had existed. This requires your body and heart to have once been split."
These are the rules of time travel.

Darkness: When the boy you thought you'd manipulated so cleverly pierced you with a Keyblade, it crossed your mind.

Darkness: You would most likely now be able to travel back in time using the method that elderly Keyblade wielder once taught you. Right?

Maleficent: So everything had been foreseen from the start.
Darkness: The Master knew, of course, that you would come to the past using that method. This is why Enchanted Dominion was never constructed in the real world, before the Keyblade War.
Maleficent: You grow tedious! The point is that you've trapped me, have you not?

Darkness: Before the Keyblade War, the Keyblade Wielders
(The book flips open, revealing the worlds we visited.)
Darkness: defeated monsters of darkness and gathered light, from future worlds of light drawn from the Book of Prophecies.
(Cuts to image of the Foretellers.)
Darkness: After the Keyblade War. the Master and the Foretellers vanished,
(Cuts to the Keyblade Graveyard.)
Darkness: and the remaining Keyblade wielders' memories of grief were overwritten with new experiences.
However, without the Master and the Foretellers, it would no longer be possible for worlds to be drawn from the Book of Prophecies.
(Cuts to the Disney characters at various points in their story, mostly happy endings.)
Darkness: For this reason, worlds were reconstructed in advance from data.
Including, you see, ones that had never been constructed in the real world.
(Back to Maleficent)
Maleficent: I told you to get to the point. So what you mean to say is that this place is not the real world?
Darkness: Correct. This place you have come to is not the real world. This is a data world that was prepared in advance, and its story has already been decided. You have been locked out from rewriting anything at all.
Maleficent: Ah, so you were forced to trap me in this isolated space because you feared my power.
Darkness: A good guess. However, it was not your power we were afraid of.
It was your memories. You know the future.
This may only be data, but one of the worlds of the seven hearts has been left out.
It would be inconvenient for us if memories of what happens in that world were to transcend time.
Maleficent: Hmph! So? What do you plan to do?
Do you intend to keep me trapped here in this world of… data, or what have you?
Darkness: That would also be inconvenient. We need to have you return to your original time.
Maleficent: But isn't it impossible to travel forwards through time?

That might be the case if the scene didn't include flashbacks to KH1 so, until we have translations, may be best to sit on over-speculating what's happened

Actually, if you look at the screenshot, it would seem that Diablo (the bird) has been turned to stone, possibly? Look at the top of the staircase on the righthand side. Now, that might also be a scenic decoration, but it is odd that that's the only stone bird in the picture and Diablo is missing from the scene.

Fascinating. So, perhaps the shadowy figure isn't Xehanort? Those flashback images showed Xehanort, as if that meeting had already taken place and was being referred to in the past tense. So, this seems to be a different character. And given the title of the cutscene, this does seem to be taking in present day in the Data World.

At this point, I'm thinking that Maleficent used the Datascape to go back to events of the past, for whatever reason. Perhaps she was trying to conquer the Data Worlds, as implied in Coded? But the events played out the same as before? I'm not sure, I'm going purely off of guesses and assumptions from what I saw in the video. The translations will clarify things, of course.

I don’t think this is the case since this scene takes place after the world’s events whereas Maleficent had already met Xehanort by the time Aurora was asleep in BBS.

Maleficent was fought in Dragon form several times and the scene with the shadowy figure takes place in Enchanted Dominion which means the time of KH 1 is out of the question as the world was destroyed at that time, which leaves either BBS time (after Aqua and Philip beat her up) or the battle from Ux itself as possible candidates.
Also, probably a total shot into the blue and impossible to clear up anyways, but the way this figure comes out of the shadow reminds me of the time in the original X[chi] when Ephemer sneaked into the Foreteller's tower and met a coaty there shrouded half in shadow as well.

I've been wondering for awhile now on if Maleficent's appearance here actually even happens before KH3, the title is starting to make me strongly think the answer might be no. I wouldn't be surprised if what we're seeing is actually the aftermath of a failed plan by Maleficent in KH3.
I'm still every so slightly under the belief that in KH3 Pete will become Julius as part of Maleficent's "big plans" for Pete and then both "Julius" and Maleficent will enter the realm sleep, getting separated in the process. Which would explain that weird red glow and that strange sound that happened that almost sounded like a portal that opened just before Julius appears. And likewise would explain why the real Maleficent appears to be alone and was talking about someone being missing.

There’s just too many layers to the setting of this game. It seems as if it is a Datascape recreating the events of the Unchained/sleeping world that was already recreating events from the real world. I just really hope there are some answers soon in regards to wtf it is we’re seeing and when/where we are within the KH universe. I’m excited to see what Maleficent is up too and what’s going to happen, but you’d think after all these years they could finally put all the “mystery†behind the lore to rest. It isn’t really an interesting mystery to me, more like a confusing hindrance as we wait to find out just how convoluted this all is.

Maybe this IS present day Maleficent we see and she just lost her memory after the Dark Footsteps scene and relived her memories like the player is doing. All of Enchanted Dominion in UX was picking up from where the Chi scene left off as Maleficent wanted to change the events. However, she couldn’t because she failed to time travel and ended up in the datascape. I’m thinking this might be Luxu speaking with the Master of Masters being whom he is referring to as “Master.â€
Y’all what if Union Cross is just a “game†of the datascape that Sora has been playing on his Gummiphone this whole time. So meta. Lmao.
Also, what about this world of one of the princesses that would cause a problem if the memories of which were brought to the future? Is it referring to Kairi/Radiant Garden? Why would that be an issue when Maleficent already knows what happened there? Or could it be that the world in question is one for our new Princesses in KH3?[/SPOILER]

Ghh, on one hand this is at least giving some more depth, or should I rather say, initiative on Maleficent's part, yet the whole multiple worlds, memory-stuff and "decided events"-mumbo is still rather complicating things.

Although this would bring up a new issue since it was apparently him that ensured Maleficent ended up in the data worlds instead of the past and by doing that Luxu is diverging from his assigned role since he's supposed to only watch.

That won't be necessary at all since Luxu owns the box?
He was tasked by the MoM to keep it hidden and ensure it is never opened so he would know where it is.

[spoiler] Me too, I was instantly thinking about Kairi and Radiant Garden, it's the only Princess-related world that's clearly hinted to something yet unknown in the plot - how Kairi from Radiant Garden arrived on Destiny Islands and suffered a memory loss too. Sooo... let me get this straight: Maleficent thought of traveling back in time to the era of the Keyblade War, but ended up traveling to the Datascape, presumably Luxu trapped her there, and the events of KHUx have been happening on the Datascape?
I think, especially with Spirits, it's safe to say Player and the Dandelions are in a Sleeping World.
However in the real world, the worlds once projected by the Book of Prophecies are instead stored as data.
Which conveniently allows Player to visit worlds of the future even after exiting the dream.

Since this all seems to take place in data​, doesn't a video game world make a lot more sense now? :)
If the concept of data is all that connects Ralph to Union Cross as a whole, it seems like they’re only forcing that specific world in to profit off the sequel film in the cheapest possible way. I don’t know why there should be a world inside a video game inside another world (Litwak’s Arcade) which would be inside a data world that is recreating the past, which recreates the future, which is all in a video game. A few too many layers for my taste. A world like Brave or even Atlantis would fit more with themes of this game as a whole and fit in with the other existing worlds as simple recreations of the past. I’m not saying Sugar Rush isn’t in the game, but I’m yet to be convinced that there is any *good* story context for its inclusion.
Also, since the world wasn’t added this month after all, they still have PGW and other events to reveal a summon for a different potential world. :)

Absolutely and your point in that regard stands. It certainly makes sense that SE would do something like this; I just don’t think they should. I’m open to seeing what they do with it and I’m hopeful that they’ll prove my doubts wrong; I just don’t see how it’ll fit with everything else in the game. But to be honest, I’m not 100% sure how it would tie into KH3 either. The benefit it has there though is being part of an immersive experience more true to the film along with plenty of those unique gameplay opportunities.
Maybe we’ll get an announcement of the new world soon now that this update has passed. Surely, if Ralph is being added, they’ll want to advertise it beforehand.

We know for sure that the next world will be a Disney one. I don’t think he would have a problem with a Disney Princess being around prior to Kairi’s birth and I don’t think it happening to be a Disney character would be as big of a deal as you think. Kairi was only like four during BBS, so surely she wasn’t around to be a Princess right after the Keyblade War.

- Maleficent learned from Master Xehanort in BbS about time travel, other than all the sutff about Keyblades and Hearts.
- Maleficent either PLANNED to be stabbed in KH1, or when it happened she thought "eh, might as well try it" and attempted to time travel.
- She ended up in the Datascape either through a mistake (how is that even possible) or because "Darkness" made her end up there. Either way, "Darkness" had an interest in keeping her there, although not perpetually.
- After the MoM and Foretellers' disappearance, no worlds were extracted from the Book, but recreated through Data. Which includes Enchanted Dominion and I guess any Ux world after the War in X.
- Due to Maleficent knowing the future, the world of a Princess got omitted (???) and that's why she was trapped.
So... could the "way" to return to the future be how Maleficent returned to life in KHII? Will Nomura cover that hole? It's a long shot, but considering 0.2 was "And that's how Mickey lost his clothes"...[/SPOILER]

One thing that's cool from this is that it finally confirms that one only needs to have their heart and body separated a single time in order to travel through time. You don't have to be "heart only" in order to be capable of time travel, it just has to have happened at one point in your lifetime. That was something that really confused me for a long time. Dream Drop Distance did a rather poor job of explaining that rule and worded it as if you couldn't have a bodily form while traveling through time, despite the fact that Sora, Riku, Young Xehanort, Xemnas, and more were clearly violating this rule.

I wasn't expecting to come in here to princess speculation. Considering all the other worlds are from the original 7 princesses in KH and the dark figure is somewhat mocking Maleficent for trying to repeat her actions, it's crystal clear they're talking about why Kairi was the only one left out. The scene is...frustratingly vague. We've had like three translators look at it.
Personally, I think they wanted to keep the fall of Radiant Garden away from the data worlds so that KH1 didn't happen all over again. Again.

She attempts time travel, learns all these secrets and truths, and uses the "way" to return to her own time.
She comes back in KH II. She now opposes Xehanort (Xemnas), either because she feels used or because she thinks she can get more working solo, now that she has more knowledge.
She knows what she knows about the Dataspace and the Book of Prophecies in Coded because of this cutscene we just saw.

One would assume that it's after, but it's not totally clear yet. Because we assume that Maleficent attempted this after the events of Coded and DDD, but what if not? The scene seems to imply that it's possible that this took place perhaps soon after KH1 happened. Perhaps after her "death" in KH1, this scene takes place and her return from the Data World is how she resurrects in KH2 for seemingly no reason? Not to mention, in the Re:coded movie from 2.5, Maleficent mentions how the Datascape feels familiar and reminds her of the Book of Prophecies. How would they feel familiar if she had never tried to visit their realms before?
So, perhaps Maleficent, upon having her heart "unlocked" in KH1 by Riku-Ansem, figured "Hey, I can travel back in time now. Maybe I should give it a shot?" because Xehanort had already told her about it back in the BBS days. So, she attempts it and then the scene we've just witnessed happens, because she somehow winds up in the data recreation of Enchanted Dominion rather than the actual past version of it. Darkness is there to greet her, tells her there is a way to return back to the real world, and then her return takes place in KH2. After which, Coded and DDD happen which explains Maleficent's familiarity with the worlds as well as her desire to obtain them as she knows the power they contain.
Certainly an interesting possibility.

2) Using this she manipulated the darkness in Terra's heart to make him think he stole Aurora's pure heart, gains her heart but loses it thanks to Ventus
3) The next year she somehow gains power over the Heartless and also ends up helping cause the fall of Radiant Garden
4) Over the next nine years she gains Cinderella, Snow White, Aurora, and Belle's hearts
5) The events of KHI take place
6) Her stabbing by Riku grants her the power to time travel
7) Somewhere between then and Coded, she attempted to time travel but ended up in data Enchanted Dominion where she is told about data worlds, Foretellers, travelling to the future, and the Book of Prophicies
8) Ends up in the datascape thanks to Pete
9) After the events believes there's a connection between the BoP and JJ and attempts to steal it

That's absolutely the other interpretation of that quote, both always had their share of backers.
But, and especially now that the updated translation says "This requires your body heart to have ONCE been split", I'm leaning more towards the other one.
It just gives more sense to Nomura's words in my mind, which I always found weird. It was an odd specification with no real informative purpose otherwise.

This is the only part of this scenario that I'm stuck on. Maleficent traveled back in time, but how did she travel back to the Data Worlds unintentionally? I don't get that part of it. Everything else that follows from there (at least, from what we're theorizing anyway) makes total sense.
I think that's where the fake Enchanted Dominion comes into play.
Maleficent performed the action of "travelling back to the Enchanted Dominion of the past", and she got the time part right, but since for this exact reason the Master never made Enchanted Dominion out of the Book, the... I dunno... "mind" that regulates time travels searched for the next best thing in that time frame, aka the Data version of that world (that was also made for the very purpose of trapping her)
It's some kind of mishap that's not entirely out of what KH has done in the past: Kingdom Key lost sight of Riku and settled for Sora; Kairi lost her heart, but since her heart wasn't in her body to begin with in order to create a Nobody "it" used Sora's body; and so on.
So, the data version of Enchanted Dominion was both a replacement and the bait.

I think the difference is that the worlds from the Book of Prophecies are holograms - so think more along the lines of Augmented Reality. We are still in the real world and it seems to imply that these worlds do exist in the real world as well.
Meanwhile the data worlds are data - so think more along the lines of virtual reality - we are literally travelling to those data worlds and basically playing out the narrative set in it.
So, if Enchanted Dominion had been constructed from the Book prior to the Keyblade War, Maleficent would have been able to travel back to the hologram version of herself and ended up in the real world where she could interfere. Because the data world wasn't, say, uploaded until after the Keyblade War, she can't go back any further.

I am pretty confused about the situation with Enchanted Dominion, like, the data ED was created even though the real ED didn't exist before the Keyblade War. Time travelling is possible if some version of yourself existed at the desired point in the past. Only a data Maleficent would be a "past Maleficent" waiting for the real Maleficent in the data ED. So now even a data version of someone counts as "a version" of them existing at a specific point in time?
Is everything just a messy yet strategical time-loop in the end?

Maybe, but at this point it might not "real" data anymore. The situation in DDD is somewhat the same when The Grid isn't actually a Sleeping World but the "real" thing.
I agree that if the data version of someone counts as a real version time-traveling in a data version could be possible but why would Maleficent seek this version of her specifically, a version she might not even know exists, just to be tricked in the end?

OR my really old theory I’ve had since BBS’s secret ending where we were getting lines like “two who were never meant to meetâ€. The events we are seeing in Chi is the original future MoM saw. But the MoM and Xehanort shenanigans have thrown time wildly off course, destined events are still happening but everything else has become a variable mess.

Because the Book wasn't really bringing "the future" to the X era, more like an illusion of it.
It's like the medals: it's not like you're bringing literally Sora, Aqua or Larxene and they will retain conscience and memory of it.
Saving Snowhite in X had no repercussion of when Ventus will meet her in BbS because only the latter truly happened, the former was just an illusion, a simulation. It will not have lasting consequences aside from the light that is gathered from it by the players.
Maleficent wanted to travel further back than BbS, at least it's what I think.
Man, would it be even more confusing if she was trying to go back to BbS and was somehow lured into Ux.

Which it never was.

Chi currently has time traveling both forward and backward, data recreation, alternate dimensions, and the sleeping realm all at once. And none of it has been clarified as to when any of it takes place or what context its happening in so it's all very very frustrating and hard to follow, moreso than any KH title before it.
Dream Eaters, as far as we know, can only exist in the Sleeping Worlds. This would imply that Chi is somehow taking place in the Realm of Sleep due to the presence of Spirits as well as Chirithy.
But, we now have confirmation of Data Worlds. This conflicts with the Dream Eaters, because data "does not dream, cannot dream" as stated by Young Xehanort.

But then we have the "world outside" or "Unchained" which is where the Dandelions apparently go after the Keyblade War? Some kind of alternate dimension that exists apart from the universe where the Keyblade War took place?? But there are spirits there so it's also the Realm of Sleep? But when the Foretellers disappeared, the Book of Prophecies stopped rendering future worlds, so now they're Data Worlds?????

I always thought Back Cover for example was in reality...but yeah chirithy’s still exist there too...but dream realm as far as I’m aware of has no concept of time actually, so if the entire keyblade war took place in a dream, how would it be legend Xehanort is aware of when said event 1. Happened in dreams and 2. Was erased from everyone’s mind
I always thought there was going to be some big twist at some point where it was revealed that everything we've seen of Chi was somehow a dream of the events being had by one of the characters, or maybe Young Xehanort reading whatever book it is that tells him about the past that leads him to crave answers.
As far as how the legend survives despite being erased from everyone's minds, we do know that a single copy of the Book of Prophecies is given to the Dandelion leaders, and they all are allowed to keep their memories of the event. So, the story survives through them and is assumed to eventually be read by Xehanort.

Well, least this helps reassure me the possibility of my hypothesis that everything is being controlled by the essences of darkness and light, and that those two essences are actually conscious beings. I realized the possibility of darkness having a consciousness from the devil's tide foe in 0.2. They were being controlled by the darkness, for as we know, once you become a heartless you lose everything including your consciousness. So yeah, literal reference to that chess game Eraqus and Xehanort played... light and darkness using everyone as pawns.

My understanding of things is thus:
1) Back Cover and X take place in the real world. Chirithy exists because of the Master of Masters bringing it into the Realm of Light through experimentation - hence why it's in a beaker
2) Unchained X takes place in the Realm of Sleep and relives the events of X.
3) Union X takes place in a middle of 1 and 2. The new Foretellers are "awake" - Ephemer, Ven, Skuld, Brain, and Lauriam - and they can travel between the Realm of Sleep and Realm of Light as they please. The players are "asleep" and are living a dream in which the Keyblade War didn't happen after all. Hence why more Dream Eaters.
4) The Book of Prophecies created projections - holograms - of future events of worlds that existed back then. Because they are simulations, they take place in the real world and can thus be interfered with.
5) Sometime during all this, the Master created data versions of these simulations and future ones. These data versions are what we travel to in our dream - they aren't asleep, they were placed there. Data isn't dreaming, but they can end up in that Realm.
6) Going from point 5, because they are data worlds, they can't interfere with the real world.
7) To put it more clearly, the Book of Prophecies was like a play based on a real event - realistically you could throw a tomato at the lead if you wanted to and disrupt the performance but you can't change the real event. Maleficent's plan was to essentially break into the theater and get rid of the actors she didn't like so the play went how she wanted.
8) Data worlds are like a movie - no matter what you throw at the screen, it won't disrupt anything in the real world. She can't change the actors or the script; she stuck with the movie she got. So, when Maleficent time traveled, she ended up in the movie theater rather than the play theater thanks to the Master and can not change events no matter what she does.

Representing another mystery person as static fuzz has my interest. It's possible it means nothing, but I find it odd to draw our attention to them like this when, if they're supposed to be a mystery, a blurry shadow would make more sense. The games have also used the TV static effect in past games when dealing with memories and data. Now that we know the worlds we visit in UX are made of data this time around, I wonder if there's a connection here between that and the static effect.
Since Mr. Darkness is obviously not part of Enchanted Dominion, what if the static effect is a sign that Lauriam is also "not part" of Daybreak Town, and manipulated data so he could kill Strelitzia and take her place?

This makes a great deal of sense. I always thought the whole point of that big reveal of the Dream Eater sigil on Chrithy's back was supposed to signify that Chi is taking place in a dream. From how we were introduced to them in DDD, I had assumed that Dream Eaters can only exist in the Realm of Sleep. But, I guess we have seen Sora summon Meow Wow in the Realm of Light in KH3, so that would prove that they can travel into different Realms.
So, did the Master invent Dream Eaters? Or did he create them ahead of time due to knowing they would exist in the future and using that knowledge to create Chirithys?
Either way, this makes things make more sense. So, Chi is the real world, Unchained is the Realm of Sleep.
So, does that mean that the surviving wielders are in the Realm of Sleep/Unchained temporarily in order to have their memories of the War wiped and they'll eventually be brought back into the Realm of Light, assumedly not ever knowing that they had been asleep to begin with?

To our knowledge, all of that was the REAL world, not a dream. There's more proof of that in KH3, but I don't know about spoilers in this sub so I won't say why.

Ok, here goes.
First let's explain the timelines: Kingdom Hearts X was the tell of the Keyblade War where player once existed. This happened in the Real World. Ephemer and Skuld had their mission happening already (being new leaders) by the time the KW took place and so they took the Dandelions and Player into the Realm of Dreams to keep the light from expiring, as Ava clearly explained in her speech in Back Cover, and also later it's explained this is also to rewrite the sad memories of the war which led to Kingdom Hearts Unchained X. After the KW the Foretellers vanished as the Master once did and without any of them the Book of Prophecies couldn't conjure anything anymore in the form of Holograms so the Master of Masters (presumably) prepared Data Versions of the worlds in advance INSIDE the Realm of Dreams (This is where it gets tricky). We know the worlds are not at all existing in the first place during KHX, they're just holograms, so there can't be any Sleeping Worlds in the Realm of Dreams in the first place, so much like The Grid in DDD, they are a "real" Data version of the world within the Realm of Dreams. In other words, we're jumping back and forth from data world to data world within the Realm of Dreams. As for Spirits and Nightmares it has never, to my knowledge, being said they can't exist in the Real World, they were actually created in the Real World in the form of Chirithies and after the KW they were sent as guides for the Player within the Realm of Dreams. Let's remember even a Meow Wow and Komory Bat appeared to aid Riku IN THE REAL WORLD as Riku himself states he's back at. Now, we have now received variants of Spirits which were provided to us by Ephemer and co. which add the "Variety" we know from DDD created within the Realm of Dreams where they have stayed to this day, and I'm sure something will happen where the Nightmares will be created as well, but that will be for another day.
NOW on to this scene. Maleficent travelled back in time in order to rewrite the events of her world and change future in a way it benefited her, but since the Book of Prophecies was no longer functioning withouth the Master of Masters and the Foretellers, the closest version of herself in that past was the digital version of herself within the Data Enchanted Dominion which she hadn't noticed until this new figure "Darkness" told her about it. As Darkness also explains the past events of the X saga, he mentions that, as coded data, those worlds follow prescribed events that cannot be changed. This was a part of the "Master's plan", since he knew Maleficent would try to go back in time to do this and so "he" trapped her in that Data World. "Darkness" also says one of the PoH's World was left out since the knowledge of the events of that world cannot be brought to the future, hence why Maleficent travelling to the past was a risk, but he also says he needs her back in the current era and it seems there is "a way" to do so.
So a few pointers in here:
1.- It's really vague to know if the PoH's world "Darkness" talks about is Radiant Garden (being Kairi's hometown) since Maleficent knows about the events in that world already so, what actual risk would that have to leave this world out if she already knows about it? This could only be plausible if some events happened in RG BEFORE Maleficent even took control of the place. Other theory is that maybe "Darkness" is talking about another new world we don't know about (which was heavily teased by Square Enix in previous events and interviews) that holds another Princess of Heart which later inherited "her light" to Kairi's or some story like that. This is still to be explained.
2.- For the way "Darkness" speaks it's led to believe he is Luxu talking about the Master, however, Nomura said a new character would be revealed on the "newest update" so this might be in fact a new character.
3.- Since Maleficent's travel through time happened after the KH1 keyblade stab it's safe to assume she was returned to the current era of that time, thus making her return in KHII (without her memories of that experience most likely since Young Xehanort also explains in DDD that once back in your era the memories of those events should be erased). This is only a theory though.
4.- If "Darkness" returns Maleficent to her era it's safe to assume it will be afterwards this that Player will visit the new world teased by Nomura, this in the way the story can progress without Maleficent interferring and getting the new world's knowledge.

I think we all assumed Dream Eaters were a product of the Realm of Sleep, and thus inferred that they could only exist during a state of sleep or dreams. But, it would appear that's not the case. And it wouldn't be a contradiction if they could jump between Realms because they were never stated to only be able to exist in the Realm of Sleep, at least as far as I'm aware.
Perhaps Chirithy, similar to Emblem Heartless created by Ansem SoD, is an "Emblem Spirit" in a sense (even though all Spirits bear the symbol).
So, that would mean that Chi is in fact the real world, and Unchained is the Realm of Sleep, hence why the Spirit companions don't manifest until after the Keyblade War when the wielders are sent into sleep to have their memories rewritten.

DE got introduced as the creatures that manifested Darkness in the Realm of Sleep because Heartless couldn't appear, so the assumption was that it worked also the other way around.

Ephemer and Skuld had their mission happening already (being new leaders) by the time the KW took place and so they took the Dandelions and Player into the Realm of Dreams to keep the light from expiring, as Ava clearly explained in her speech in Back Cover, and also later it's explained this is also to rewrite the sad memories of the war which led to Kingdom Hearts Unchained X. After the KW the Foretellers vanished as the Master once did and without any of them the Book of Prophecies couldn't conjure anything anymore in the form of Holograms so the Master of Masters (presumably) prepared Data Versions of the worlds in advance INSIDE the Realm of Dreams (This is where it gets tricky). We know the worlds are not at all existing in the first place during KHX, they're just holograms, so there can't be any Sleeping Worlds in the Realm of Dreams in the first place, so much like The Grid in DDD, they are a "real" Data version of the world within the Realm of Dreams. In other words, we're jumping back and forth from data world to data world within the Realm of Dreams. As for Spirits and Nightmares it has never, to my knowledge, being said they can't exist in the Real World, they were actually created in the Real World in the form of Chirithies and after the KW they were sent as guides for the Player within the Realm of Dreams. Let's remember even a Meow Wow and Komory Bat appeared to aid Riku IN THE REAL WORLD as Riku himself states he's back at. Now, we have now received variants of Spirits which were provided to us by Ephemer and co. which add the "Variety" we know from DDD created within the Realm of Dreams where they have stayed to this day, and I'm sure something will happen where the Nightmares will be created as well, but that will be for another day.
NOW on to this scene. Maleficent travelled back in time in order to rewrite the events of her world and change future in a way it benefited her, but since the Book of Prophecies was no longer functioning withouth the Master of Masters and the Foretellers, the closest version of herself in that past was the digital version of herself within the Data Enchanted Dominion which she hadn't noticed until this new figure "Darkness" told her about it. As Darkness also explains the past events of the X saga, he mentions that, as coded data, those worlds follow prescribed events that cannot be changed. This was a part of the "Master's plan", since he knew Maleficent would try to go back in time to do this and so "he" trapped her in that Data World. "Darkness" also says one of the PoH's World was left out since the knowledge of the events of that world cannot be brought to the future, hence why Maleficent travelling to the past was a risk, but he also says he needs her back in the current era and it seems there is "a way" to do so.
So a few pointers in here:
1.- It's really vague to know if the PoH's world "Darkness" talks about is Radiant Garden (being Kairi's hometown) since Maleficent knows about the events in that world already so, what actual risk would that have to left this world out if she already knows about it? This could only be plausible if some events happened in RG BEFORE Maleficent even took control of the place. Other theory is that maybe "Darkness" is talking about another new world we don't know about (which was heavily teased by Square Enix in previous events and interviews) that holds another Princess of Heart which later inherited "her light" to Kairi's or some story like that. This is still to be explained.
2.- For the way "Darkness" speaks it's led to believe he is Luxu talking about the Master, however, Nomura said a new character would be revealed on the "newest update" so this might be in fact a new character.
3.- Since Maleficent's travel through time happened after the KH1 keyblade stab it's safe to assume she was returned to the current era of that time, thus making her return in KHII (without her memories of that experience most likely since Young Xehanort also explains in DDD that once back in your era the memories of those events should be erased). This is only a theory though.
4.- If "Darkness" returns Maleficent to her era it's safe to assume it will be afterwards this that Player will visit the new world teased by Nomura, this in the way the story can progress without Maleficent interferring and getting the new world's knowledge.
There's actually stuff we don't really know about Radiant Garden despite what everyone seems to think. For instance, how was Ienzo orphaned? And Kairi too considering we only see her grandmother. Lea and Isa were up to something trying to break into the castle. How does Grandma even know the story of the worlds being reborn anyway?
And consider this, so far every Final Fantasy character except three seems to come from Radiant Garden so...how does Zack end up in Olympus Coliseum? Where is Sephiroth? If Auron's also from Radiant Garden, then something in his past with Braska had to play out similar to his Final Fantasy X past. If the Gullwings are from Radiant Garden, the fairies exist there despite seeing no others.
We actually know very little outside some Ansem stuff and most of that pertains after Xehanort was made an apprentice.

That's the other thing. Dream Eaters, when introduced in DDD, were stated to be the form that darkness takes in the Realm of Sleep. Rather than spawning Heartless, darkness turns into Nightmares when a world is sleeping. So, the assumption was like "Oh, I guess when the world wakes up, the dream ends and so do the Dream Eaters." But I guess by now that's been shown to be false.
But then, did the Master create Dream Eaters himself? Was Chirithy the first kind and then the Dream Eaters entering the Realm of Sleep with the sleeping Dandelions what caused them to be present there in the first place?

Right now, I'm kind of picturing it like the pureblood heartless situation. Before Xehanort ripped a giant hole into the dark realm, heartless weren't just roaming around the real world destroying worlds and taking peoples heart. They 'naturally' existed in the dark realm and that's it.
But, as Xehanort demonstrated in BbS, he can bring those heartless to the real world if he really wanted to, just not in mass. Or, he can even create his own.
Dream Eaters are the same. They exist naturally in the realm of sleep, living their lives and minding their own business. But, they can also exist in the real world if someone brought them there or they are created, like Chirithy. I don't think one could rip a hole into the realm of sleep and let natural Dream Eaters fill the worlds though, the Realm of Sleep seems like... it's on a different kind of plane.

I feel like y'all are confusing me more than the actual scene lol. I dunno, I think it is saying this is a Data projection after all. But I also always assumed it was the Realm of Sleep, given the Dream Eaters. I guess...someone could possibly project data into the Realm of Sleep? But it is probably also just as easy to make a data projection of the RoS, and inhabitants like Dream Eaters. I guess that would also explain how Heartless are still there, and, as previously mentioned, why PvP and Org XIII fights are very clearly Data.
Its interesting that they "can't change the events of the Data versions", feels like he is just explaining why its lazily following the Movie plots lol. Also, its kinda funny of all the original worlds, they chose to redo Agrabah in Data...

Ahhhhh, now that this translation has happened, I think I see what's up. BBS Maleficent learns about time travel from Master Xehanort, then remembers it when she loses her body in KH1. She travels back to this trap set for her by the Master of Masters to prevent her from altering history, but the Master knows she is necessary for the events of KH2 and beyond. The static figure, who I'm guessing is Luxu or his apprentice, is tasked with returning her to her time for that exact reason. The method I'm not sure on, but it must have something to do with how the bird Diablo got her cloak and specifically brought it to the 3 Good Fairies. Maleficent comes back probably with no conscious memories of her time spent in the trap, but now instinctively knows that data worlds are similar to worlds from the Book of Prophecies leading her to draw exactly that connection in Re:Coded. Perhaps even her quest for the box is tied to this, hmm.

I think it was stated numerous times that the reason Riku can appear with his Dream Eaters in the real world in DDD is because Sora is still sleeping (dreaming them). The Chirithy's and Spirits in KHUX can be different of course, but there could also be someone dreaming them there too.

Right, but that could still have been a Realm of Sleep variation. All the worlds were lost to darkness after the war for at least some amount of time, so it could have just no reawakened yet. Also, the scenes involving us meeting the Dandelion leaders seemed like they were flashbacks more than anything else, explaining how they came to meet and act together as a group. It seemed to occur before they save the Player, given that both Ephemer and Skuld are present but Ephemer is suprised to see Skuld. If I remember correctly, both Ephemer and Skuld appeared in the scene where they intervene and bring the Player to the Unchained Realm?

If the events of the world's plot followed the film's plot, then yes. They would have returned to their own world, which logically would have been located in the Realm of Light. Since we don't actually see where they end up after they disappear, we can't technically say for sure but that's the simplest assumption; that Sam and Quorra return to "Earth" which is in the Realm of Light.

The thing about DDD worlds is that they were also scenes from usually the past that were stuck in a loop.
For example, Prankster's Paradise was what happened to Pinocchio and his world prior to its fall into Darkness.
DDD Pinocchio and Jiminy SHOULD, according to the cronological events, proceed into what happens in KH1, but in reality they don't because that sleeping world was just a loop.
When Sora and Riku "solve" the loop... I guess the sleeping worlds just disappear, or catch up with what happens in the real version.
But it's not like the inhabitants can go from one version to the other.

Oh absolutely, I mean, I have nothing even remotely solid to claim an actual connection might be there, that is just more a wild theory/hope. At least that's what I'm seeing here.

It doesn't seem to bother anyone else but it's something that's been on my mind for years and it's how easily Maleficent teleported herself into the Datascape in Re:coded. I'm not sure about the restrictions to going in there but that solution certainly wasn't on Mickey's mind until they learn that they were unknowingly dragged into the Datascape so having ties to the data from her past makes her ability to go there make a bit more sense to me.
Edit: Y'all, if Radiant Garden is a world that the MoM didn't want reconstructed with data, did Mickey diddly up by having the world digitalised with Jiminy's Journal?

Honestly, if played well this might be a truly good retcon, it makes a bunch of things make more sense.
From Maleficent's unexplained revival in KH II, to Vexen claming she couldn't come back from the Darkness by her own will in CoM, to her knowledge about data and Ux events.
Who knows, this might even tie with whatever they're cooking up with Roxas and Data Twilight Town in KH III, since I'm wondering:
Maleficent traveled back into this fictional Enchanted Dominion.
And we now know that the Maleficent we faced as the Player was always her.
But, where is Data Maleficent then? It should be there, otherwise Maleficent had no version of herself waiting for her.

So this whole deal with fixed scenarios in the datascape worlds has me wondering, what if the Data-Twilight Town would work the same way where the scenario Ansem the Wise created for Roxas could theoretically be replayed? So maybe in KH3, there could be a recreation of the KH2 prologue, but where Sora is inside it trying to stop Roxas from merging back with him? If that makes any sense. Lol
Also, just saying, this would be a nice set up for replaying world scenarios in KH3, by constructing them as data where the outcome of the events can’t be changed event though Sora would know what’s going to happen.

I remember Nomura saying that Maleficent was unconcerned with Sora's antics during KHIII, and instead chasing her own goals. So I think that's probably very related to what's happening with her in Uχ
Aside from her castle shopping subplot in KH2, I've always enjoyed the mystery of what Maleficent is up to. I'd just hate for it to be exclusively in the mobile game that people outside of Japan can't play in their native language until like April.
Her only appearance in KH3 so far is Olympus, and that's great! She's in KH3 and she's searching for a box. But I hope that she isn't thrown into the background like she was in KH2, which is what a lot of people didn't like.

It doesn't seem to bother anyone else but it's something that's been on my mind for years and it's how easily Maleficent teleported herself into the Datascape in Re:coded. I'm not sure about the restrictions to going in there but that solution certainly wasn't on Mickey's mind until they learn that they were unknowingly dragged into the Datascape so having ties to the data from her past makes her ability to go there make a bit more sense to me.
Edit: Y'all, if Radiant Garden is a world that the MoM didn't want reconstructed with data, did Mickey diddly up by having the world digitalised with Jiminy's Journal?
Honestly, if played well this might be a truly good retcon, it makes a bunch of things make more sense.
From Maleficent's unexplained revival in KH II, to Vexen claming she couldn't come back from the Darkness by her own will in CoM, to her knowledge about data and Ux events.
Who knows, this might even tie with whatever they're cooking up with Roxas and Data Twilight Town in KH III, since I'm wondering:
Maleficent traveled back into this fictional Enchanted Dominion.
And we now know that the Maleficent we faced as the Player was always her.
But, where is Data Maleficent then? It should be there, otherwise Maleficent had no version of herself waiting for her.

Honestly, I always wondered if the two of them were connected somehow, even from way back during browser Chi. My very first thought was "Oh, Daybreak Town. So, it's like the opposite of Twilight Town. That's cute." But then, with the whole Master character with the six apprentices all over again I was like "Wait..."
I'm not saying they are, but even the giant castle/clock tower thing where the Master lives with his apprentices surrounded by a giant city of light where people live in peace but then one day disaster falls and darkness consumes the land, scattering its civilians? Tell me that wasn't done intentionally. This is Nomura we're talking about.

Is it at all plausible that Data Worlds have some sort of rule that there can only be "one instance" of a particular character in its simulation? I'm sure there's some proof against that already out there, but just a thought.
This would fit in line with the thoughts others have given so far about Data worlds, according to 'Darkness', having this property of a set story that cannot be changed. I would put (with no solid proof, but just for fun) my money on, when Maleficent entered Data-ED, her hypothetical data-self just sort of blinked out as the real-her entered in to fill her shoes.
As a random-theory-aside, I'd honestly bet the same would happen in the Realm of Sleep, in a world's dream. For example, if Jiminy Cricket went with Sora to the RoS and went to Prankster's Paradise, I'd bet there would not be two of Jiminy, but the dream would just sort of adopt the real Jiminy as the "actor" for Jiminy's role in the dream. Except in that particular case, he would have agency and perhaps change events as Sora and Riku did in DDD.
But enough silly theorizing from me.

Bit of a rant, here. Strap in or hop off.
I love ridiculously overcomplicated nonsense in my KH games as much as the next guy, but there's something missing here. These cutscenes are really a whole lot less fun without the voice acting, cinematography, musical cues, and CAMP. "I'm already half Xehanort" is amazing because it's so stupid and the camera zooms in on Xigbar's yellow eye, and the music intensifies. That shit is hilarious and effective, it gets our attention and keeps our eyes on the screen.
Mickey saying "Say, fellas, did someone mention the door to darkness?" followed by a revealing shot of him standing by the door in a black coat, that's just amazing dissonance, and can really only be done as a fully animated scene.
Union X is failing (in my little eyes) because the shots are all 3/4 angle, and the character dialogue is over-written and it makes absorbing the information into a task instead of a passive piece of entertainment. This Maleficent time traveling mumbo jumbo should be stupid campy fun, but instead we're just... reading and theorizing. It's just exposition, boring boring boring exposition. This isn't the first disappointment, either. The whole Lauriam revelation and the appearance of Ventus play into this as well. We have to get this information in the form of Union X's stale, lifeless animation.
Why, if KH is such a profitable property, are we not getting full 3D pre-rendered cutscenes? While people are still of course consuming what SE is making without fully animated videos, these blocks of exposition would be a lot more entertaining with videos done in the style of KH3. I think more fans would play if they knew that they would eventually be rewarded with cool fully animated scenes every handful of missions or so... It'd also be cool because a lot of these characters will already have existing models in KH3, many of which were already revealed in Back Cover. It'd just elevate Union X's status as a contributing part of the KH storyline, and I think a lot of people would be more willing to jump on board under these circumstances.

The thing about DDD worlds is that they were also scenes from usually the past that were stuck in a loop.
For example, Prankster's Paradise was what happened to Pinocchio and his world prior to its fall into Darkness.
DDD Pinocchio and Jiminy SHOULD, according to the cronological events, proceed into what happens in KH1, but in reality they don't because that sleeping world was just a loop.
When Sora and Riku "solve" the loop... I guess the sleeping worlds just disappear, or catch up with what happens in the real version.
But it's not like the inhabitants can go from one version to the other.
Late, but I meant sam’s real world, “earthâ€. That is a separate world from the grid, and is awake. Sam can however still travel to this place despite it being in the sleeping/dream realm correct?

For some reason, in spite of everything, it seems to me that all this Keyblade War is one big fanfiction MoM in which he, with the help of his own forces, led to believe both people of the past and people of the future.
And all creatures in the UX including us are only projections from the future created with the help of the book of prophecies.

And then it turns out the Book of Prophecies wasn't talking about the immediate future for the Foretellers at all, but Sora's time. The traitor who bears the sigil is Xehanort. The inevitable Keyblade War and fall of darkness is KHIII's plot. That's why the plots constructed from the Book of Prophecies is about current characters, not ancient characters.
And the whole time, the Master knew his apprentices would be confused and cause events written similarly in the book to happen in the past so that the future version would happen. It's a double layered plot.

Would actually make sense. If Radiant Garden is the once-known Daybreak Town, then of course the data of the origin of all this mess is the key to everything, therefore it must stay unknown.

Whew, that is some strong tobacco to digest and make sense of.
There are so many layers and still unknown variables that even when you get the main gist of it all you can still trip and realize that something doesn't add up or simply isn't explained good enough.
It reminds me of the way the plot in DDD was structured and I dunno if that can be taken as a compliment.
What is to compliment though is that goldpanner managed to make enough sense of Nomura's brain farts to translate them into proper English in record time.

Hah, that was one of the first things I thought about when finally reading the English translation.
Maleficent has bein datafied like Roxas in KH 2, now she just needs to start skateboarding around and smashing computers, then all comes full circle.
Regarding Ansem the Wise though I too got reminded of KH 2 when this "Darkness" figure speaks to Maleficent about not being able to change anything in a data world:
This is a data world that was prepared in advance
However, the wording leads me to believe that "Darkness" doesn't mean that events in the data worlds generally cannot be changed as an iron rule but more like Maleficent was deliberately and actively prevented or blocked from changing anything by "Darkness" themselves.
Near the end of KH 2 Ansem the Wise does speak about how data can change/evolve and get out of control...

What we're still missing though is some specifics on what can actually be done and what can't since there are conflicting events and opinions of characters concerning their properties shown alongside how and in what scope interactions between these and "non-data" worlds work.

As planned, I got my explanation of Chi out before this update landed. And (not so) coincidentally, the theory still holds strong.

The biggest problem in understanding Chi is and always has been perspective - That was Part 1. In Part 2 I looked at the timeline of events to further unravel the confusion (while admittedly adding some initial confusion before it finishes digesting).
This update was interesting though, I don’t believe that anyone saw KH1 Maleficent traveling backwards in time as something to even consider in the first place. It does pose some interesting implications though (that have already been discussed). Regardless, I mostly just wanted to poke my perspective on how this all makes sense into this topic for those that haven’t checked out my topic yet.

I think, especially with Spirits, it's safe to say Player and the Dandelions are in a Sleeping World.
However in the real world, the worlds once projected by the Book of Prophecies are instead stored as data.
Which conveniently allows Player to visit worlds of the future even after exiting the dream.
Nomura's taking revenge on everyone who ever said Re:coded didn't matter and I'm loving it
I remember speculation a while back that the reason Jiminy's Journal could be wiped clean after KH1 and CoM, and the reason Mickey and the gang were able to recreate the worlds from KH1 as data was because it was created from one of the Books of Prophecy. I think with this update that guess might not have been as far off as I first thought.

In fact, even before all of this I had a theory about why there's no Data Kairi: Because if she and her pure heart could be so easily copied, then Xehanort could just snatch up a Data version of her (instead of the real her) and have an easier time at getting the Seven Pure Lights--seeing as how Sora's Heartless almost came into the real world, so that kind of thing would be possible.
But if that rule applies for Kairi, why not the other Princesses of Heart? Because in the future, they're no LONGER Princesses of Heart... but Kairi still is.
And HMK has a pretty good theory about why that is, that also ties into Maleficent and the moment Riku stabbed her with the Keyblade of People's Hearts. At that moment, the Keyblade was made up of six hearts: Alice's, Snow White's, Cinderella's, Aurora's, Jasmine's, and Belle's. The Keyblade with their hearts was then used with their hearts to unlock Maleficent's darkness... So what if that instance actually corrupted the Princesses' hearts, and Kairi's was spared because hers was never used to make up that Keyblade?

Oh, interesting perspective. So what if Kairi is the key to Maleficent’s defeat in KH3 and that’s why this info has to be withheld from her? So she can’t stop Kairi from defeating her? Kairi is the only one of the main trio Maleficent doesn’t have any kind of significant relationship with, so it would be nice to see something happen between them for the final chapter in this saga.

Yup, this is correct. If a figure from the past jumps forward into the future somehow, when they return, their memories of the future fade away. Going from the future into the past and back again does not have the same effect.

I have a very hard time believing that a time traveling Maleficent would have operated with the 0% agency she did in KH2.
Actually, I think this truly justifies whatever "agency" they tried to give her in that game.
It kinda goes unnoticed and we all just assumed she was merely ditching him, but it was kinda unmotivated that Maleficent would just oppose Xemnas after being an ally of Ansem. All the more so when future games confirmed Ansem and Xemnas were part of a joint operation, meaning Maleficent was at least aware of Xemnas' existence.
She even dismisses the entire Organization when Pete tell her they're a nuisance, and Maleficent is proud, egotistical, but she never seemed so dumb that she would underestimate them without reason.
So yeah, things didn't add up from this perspective. But now that she met someone who might be even more powerful and all-knowing than Xehanort (especially if "Darkness" is indeed Luxu) and possibly acquired some newfound knowledge herself (such as going to the future while being in the past, something not even Xehanort can accomplish), that would explain her bravado. She doesn't fear Xemnas or the Organization because she knows Xehanort is not the true head honcho anymore.
Or she was just drunk on power after managing to come back, whatever it is.
I think the fact that she still didn't amount to much in KH II is just due to the awful writing to secondary and tertiary characters that game had but truly, there were gaps in Maleficent's reasoning most of us didn't really notice up until now because we just didn't have any reason to care about Maleficent post-KH1.

I think this is just going to be because of Realm of Sleep shenanigans more so than Maleficent bending the rules of Time Travel. If you recall, Sora and Riku enter the Realm of Sleep in the time of KH1 but exit it in the time of pre-KH3. Something similar might happen here, where certain people entered the RoS at the time of the Keyblade War, but they will exit it at points in time far advanced (i.e. for Ven, pre-BBS. for Maleficent, possibly during KH2). In this sense they will have "traveled to the future" without actually breaking how time travel works.

I think this is just going to be because of Realm of Sleep shenanigans more so than Maleficent bending the rules of Time Travel. If you recall, Sora and Riku enter the Realm of Sleep in the time of KH1 but exit it in the time of pre-KH3. Something similar might happen here, where certain people entered the RoS at the time of the Keyblade War, but they will exit it at points in time far advanced (i.e. for Ven, pre-BBS. for Maleficent, possibly during KH2). In this sense they will have "traveled to the future" without actually breaking how time travel works.
It all but confirms that Real of Sleep being a time capsule theory regarding the KHx denizens. Can perfectly explain Ventus and Lauriam.

I would like to know if Darkness and Master Xehanort are allies or just enemies. I think it is the latter because it looks like Darkness doesn't want Maleficent to go back to past and tell the news she got from Sora's era to Xehanort. It is like Darkness is trying to meddle in MX's big plan...
