Yosuke Matsuda: Kingdom Hearts III to release within "the next three years or so"

An outline for Square Enix’s financial briefings for the fiscal year (which ended March 31, 2017) was released online (the briefing occured on May 11, 2017). In it was a slide showing off recently released Square Enix titles including World of Final Fantasy and Rise of the Tomb Raider, as well as unreleased games such as Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3.
According to Gematsu, Square Enix president and CEO Yosuke Matsuda commented on this slide saying "this slide shows our release lineup for FY2017/3 as well as for FY2018/3 and beyond. We plan to launch each of these upcoming titles in the next three years or so.”
Don't bring out your pitch forks just yet! While it is disappointing to even think that Kingdom Hearts III might not even be out until 2020, it's worth noting that 2020 should be the latest it could release by. There's still the plausible option of a 2018 or 2019 release since Square Enix's collaboration series with Marvel, which was announced in January 2017 and will not have any information released on it until January 2018, was also listed and it stands to reason that Matsuda's comments could be refering to that game being the one that could release in 2020.

Yea that's certainly reason to be pissed if it's not out until 2020. That's just about eight years of development if pre production started at the end of 2012 and seven years since announcement. That's nearing FFXV/versus development time length.
After reading this, I genuinely believe Jose's rumour leaks now. Judging by the order of the slide, Kingdom Hearts III is taking priority for fiscal year 2018, with Final Fantasy VII Remake after that. All the images alined in descending order for fiscal year 2017 released in that very pattern.

Why are you so persistent about "Jose's leaks"? They still are things anyone would've guessed and things that have largely been suspected by the fandom since like 3 years. If those 'leaks' do come true, well... whatever? It's not like that matters at al.
Assuming they are good at PR, they must feel there is a realistic chance that 2020 is a possibility. I don't think they will release such a statement if they expect the game will be out in 2018. But I can easily be wrong.

FFXV and Duke Nukem Forever are great examples of games that spent too much time in the oven. It'd be a shame to see KH3 join their ranks. Pretty crummy stuff.

Exactly. I highly doubt they are dumping all three of these titles on us in 2020. I still believe KH3 is next year's big Square game, and if it is then this E3 should have lots of info and that will give them the rest of this year and however long next year until release to promote and finish development. My money is on KH3 being 2018 and the Marvel game being the 2020 game. FF7R...I'd say 2019 but I have no clue.
At least we need to give Square Enix at least 3 more Years to get into Development for this Game although i do want this game to keep work in Development.

Uh... a lot of people who appear to be fans or at the very least hold a moderate amount of interest in the saga known as Kingdom Hearts took the declaration pertaining the games coming out over the span of 2020 as a confirmation that Kingdom Hearts III will come out in 2020, and this bothers me since I happen to have to moderate a lot of them in my spare time.
I honestly do think Square Enix is also partially at fault. I know I sound like a broken record by now, but they REALLY shouldn't have announced it back in 2013 (and I'm aware Nomura said so himself).
I don't see any good reason why they announced KH3 back in 2013. They wanted us to know that there was gonna be a KH3? We all knew that. I don't really give a damn about "this game is in development now". I want to know when it will release.
Everybody wants a bug-free game, a glitch-free game, and a good game, etc. But that's what good games need. A plan. "We'll have this ready by then, we'll have that ready by then", and then those developers need someone to tell them "if the game isn't ready by X, you're gonna get into problems". My problem isnot that development takes a long time.
Guerilla Games did it the best way with Horizon: Zero Dawn- the game had been in development since 2011. And when did they announce it? No, not at E3 2011 with a rendered trailer that's "look at the cool stuff we're developing", but they announced it 2015 and released it 2017! Bam. They had their time when they figured out the right art-style, the right gameplay, and they had their time to develop at least half of the game to show something.
I don't know about you guys, but once a game gets announced, there is this "timer" for me. 3 years is okay, anything beyond is bearable and understandable - there will always be turbulences and problems that might lead to "delays" and it's completely fine. What really ticks me off is when they announce a game solely to say "hey, it's in development".
I don't care if it's in development now or not, the only thing I care about is when it'll release. We all knew KH3 would release sooner or later. Everybody knew there was going to be a Kingdom Hearts 3, they wanna know when it'll release. 2013, the announcement was about 4 years ago. Why announce something if there's nothing to show? I mean, it's great it's being worked on, so when will it release -- "no idea".
I'm giving them one more year. 2019. Anything beyond reaches the point where I don't even wanna wait anymore.

That was my first thought. PS666 might be a better bet though. Funny, there was a time I thought KH3 would for sure be on PS3... LOL
I have to laugh at anyone who thinks the game won't be riddled with glitches/bugs just because they took 20 years to make it. There'll likely be patch after patch, then a Final Mix which needs patches of its own, and so on.
Sometimes when I think of KH, I realize I first started this series when I was 13 in middle school. Now I'm 5 years out of college, and KH3 still hasn't been released. Just, lol. There is nothing to do but laugh at this point.
I find this hilarious and said as much on twitter. Even with a date it could always be delayed. Take a look at Persona 5. It got the release date for 2013 or 2014 until it got released this year for the US to have it. Whereas I think Japan got it last year. And same could be said for FFXV, when they announced it for September and still pushed it back for a November release instead.
At this point, it's to be expected that video games will be delayed. At least for me it is. However, I am glad they give us a estimate of a likely time of releasing KH3 or FFVIIR within the next three years. Which is the most I'll give to being optimistic about it. And it'd be a really stupid move on their part if they switch gens a second time around for KH3.
BUT I'm also thinking 2018 because, Nomura likes to release KH games each year. And nothing else KH related is coming out expect for KH3.

Like seriously, lol, I have expected something like this ever since Nomura stated that KH III was revealed/announced too early for his tastes, and yet in those countless "KH III release date"-threads made since 2013 I was very often lauded a pessimist when advising caution and less overblown expectations concerning the release date.
Then again, even if KH III would truly release only 2020 and one counts the time since announcement 2013 it would be a seven year-development cycle, still below the whole Duke Nukem/VersusXIII/FFXV monsters timewise and while certainly long still within reason for an AAA title probably crammed to the brim with content.
To me, it wouldn't have particularly matter when KH3 released if they had chosen the right time to announce it.

I never said it was groundbreaking, I just personally take Jose rumours as facts. I'm not even saying that everybody should believe in him just because I do, but his description seems to match why Square Enix have been too conservative with Kingdom Hearts III.

The last trailer we officially saw was in 2015. That was at the same year that Kingdom Hearts 2.8 was announced. Kingdom Hearts III was being simultaneously developed with all these other Kingdom Hearts projects, so most of its progression was in secrecy. A March 2018 or December 2018 is entirely possible to pull off if Disney and Square Enix see that sort of release period feasible.

Hype culture needs to calm down. Games are getting more and more advanced, but people still expect them to be done in only a few years. In KH3's case, it's been in real development for about 4-5 years now? I'm of the belief it'll come late next year so that seems like a reasonable release time for me.
At this point, even 4-5 years of development seems short for a good AAA game.
That said, I'm not expecting KH3 to come out clean. I remember back in the day how impressed I was with how little bugs KH1 and KH2 had. Even now, they're pretty clean bug wise. I haven't run into any bugs in the recent releases, but they do seem to be getting more and more common. Again, another problem with things getting more complicated in gaming development.
I hope gaming development does get better about their bugs though. I really hate the "update the bugs out later" culture that has become normalized, but what can you do. Nothing much. Just cross your fingers that if KH3 does release with a ton of bugs, they aren't game breaking and SE is quick to fix them.
All I want out of KH3 is for Nomura to tie up the plot nicely. As long as the gameplay isn't absolutely terrible, I'm satisfied.

But here's the truth: Anything related to KH3's release date causes a divide within the fanbase.

I think it's obvious that the 2020 date is not for KH 3. It's for one of the 3 titles. I think SE is planning on releasing on blockbuster a year. KH 3 will be coming out next year. Followed by FF 7 Remake in 2019 and then Marvel IP in 2020.

It kinda does though. There's a reason why they're posting so fans don't forget about the series. By all accounts, Kingdom Hearts 3 should be at E3 otherwise there's little sense in the KH account tweeting out random things about Kingdom Hearts in the middle of the year.

Considering there are other games that come out with more content and in a more timely matter, it's not enough for KHIII to simply be a typical, adequate Kingdom Hearts game. The Zelda series had this problem: it was releasing average, formulaic games Assassin's Creed, Darksiders, Dark Souls, and other adventure titles were modernizing. Finally, Nintendo made a Zelda game like they meant it: Breath of the Wild, full of content and polish, which single-handedly gave the Nintendo Switch the boost it needed, and even helped sell Wii Us.
It's not so much the delays as it is that SquareEnix always feels like they're flailing around with their big projects. It seemed like every step through development of FFXV, they were saying that had to cut out such-and-such content, or they couldn't get such-and-such feature to work, and so on. When Nintendo delays a game multiple times, people are frustrated, but usually confident that Nintendo knows what they're doing, as was the case with Breath of the Wild. But SquareEnix seems to operate like some struggling indie developer, trying to crank out Mighty No. 9 with no idea on how to really do it.
It's time for SquareEnix to right the ship and figure out a better way of doing things, like their contemporaries have. A game like KHIII should be the equivalent of Captain America: Civil War, not Thor: The Dark World.

You're acting like it's gonna be coming out at the very beginning of 2018.... After E3, there's still 6 months left of 2017 to promote KH3. Which I'm sure it will be appearing at TGS and JF. And then there's D23 in February, and it will also probably appear at E3 next year as well, which it will most likely release soon after that. That's literally an entire year from now to then that they have to promote. And if it were to be coming out before E3 next year which is around that 9/10 month time frame you're talking, why the f**k would that NOT be enough time for them to promote? That's a LONG time. If they had went out on full promotion that lasted over a year, then people would start losing interest.

Finally, Nintendo made a Zelda game like they meant it: Breath of the Wild, full of content and polish, which single-handedly gave the Nintendo Switch the boost it needed, and even helped sell Wii Us.
It's not so much the delays as it is that SquareEnix always feels like they're flailing around with their big projects. It seemed like every step through development of FFXV, they were saying that had to cut out such-and-such content, or they couldn't get such-and-such feature to work, and so on. When Nintendo delays a game multiple times, people are frustrated, but usually confident that Nintendo knows what they're doing, as was the case with Breath of the Wild. But SquareEnix seems to operate like some struggling indie developer, trying to crank out Mighty No. 9 with no idea on how to really do it.
It's time for SquareEnix to right the ship and figure out a better way of doing things, like their contemporaries have. A game like KHIII should be the equivalent of Captain America: Civil War, not Thor: The Dark World.
I don't know what's going on in the inner workings of Square, but based on what happened to FF15, it sounds to me like the engine they built was pretty, but it sucked to develop in. It gave everyone a headache, especially Nomura I bet. It took so long to do anything that they replaced him with someone who probably had lower standards. I'm not saying that as a negative thing, just that we've all heard that Nomura can be a little bit of a perfectionist (Yoko implied this in their joint interview). Square probably didn't want to pour anymore money into FF15 and wanted to just shove it out of the door.
KH3's problem is that unlike the FF franchise, it hadn't moved onto the next gen yet and Nomura certainly did not want to work in the engine Square was using, correct? Meaning, they had to start completely from scratch. They might've spent months (maybe even a year?) testing out the different engine options before settling on Unreal. Then they had to learn how to use Unreal and rebuild 15 years worth of assets plus some (depending on which worlds are returning of course)
Other than the initial kick off, it doesn't seem like KH3 is flailing to me. 0.2 had a few issues, but if it's just a "demo" to show their progress with KH3, I think things are looking pretty fantastic.
I don't pay much attention to other Square games, but WOFF seems to have gotten in and out fairly smoothly and I quite like it so far. 5 years for KH3 (if it's coming in 2018) seems like a perfectly reasonable development time. We all know FF15 is kind of a special kind of disaster, I don't think their next big FF game will have that many issues. As for FF7R, I feel like it's not their highest priority or they haven't been doing too much with it or they're running into issues deciding where to cut the story up for a dumb episodic adventure.

I want to point out that there's no reason the games necessarily have to be released one per year. The Marvel property, especially, considering that it's being made by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, and not Square Enix Japan, meaning it can't step on any toes.

kinda. like, yeah he did essentially say that kh3 would be released within the next 1-3 years, but it wasn't an announcement /about/ kh3 specifically. so like it is true, but the framing is a little off? i guess lol?
like maybe a better way to frame it would have been something like
"KH3 among other flagship titles that Matusda says will release within the next three years"
or something.
I honestly do think Square Enix is also partially at fault. I know I sound like a broken record by now, but they REALLY shouldn't have announced it back in 2013 (and I'm aware Nomura said so himself).
I don't see any good reason why they announced KH3 back in 2013. They wanted us to know that there was gonna be a KH3? We all knew that. I don't really give a damn about "this game is in development now". I want to know when it will release.
Everybody wants a bug-free game, a glitch-free game, and a good game, etc. But that's what good games need. A plan. "We'll have this ready by then, we'll have that ready by then", and then those developers need someone to tell them "if the game isn't ready by X, you're gonna get into problems". My problem isnot that development takes a long time.
Guerilla Games did it the best way with Horizon: Zero Dawn- the game had been in development since 2011. And when did they announce it? No, not at E3 2011 with a rendered trailer that's "look at the cool stuff we're developing", but they announced it 2015 and released it 2017! Bam. They had their time when they figured out the right art-style, the right gameplay, and they had their time to develop at least half of the game to show something.
I don't know about you guys, but once a game gets announced, there is this "timer" for me. 3 years is okay, anything beyond is bearable and understandable - there will always be turbulences and problems that might lead to "delays" and it's completely fine. What really ticks me off is when they announce a game solely to say "hey, it's in development".
I don't care if it's in development now or not, the only thing I care about is when it'll release. We all knew KH3 would release sooner or later. Everybody knew there was going to be a Kingdom Hearts 3, they wanna know when it'll release. 2013, the announcement was about 4 years ago. Why announce something if there's nothing to show? I mean, it's great it's being worked on, so when will it release -- "no idea".
I'm giving them one more year. 2019. Anything beyond reaches the point where I don't even wanna wait anymore.
And just to clarify. My point is "announce your games when there is something to show", not "release the games quickly".
Those who announce their game and work on it for, say, 8 years are making fools of themselves. Those who secretly work on it for 8 years and announce it when they have something to show, win.
I mean not that I necessarily agree with announcing KH3 all the way back in 2013, but to be fair to SE/Nomura they were in kind of a tricky situation at that point. In 2013 Days, BbS, Coded, and DDD had all been released after KH2. A lot of people, especially those who didn't care about the "spin-off games", were getting restless for KH3 so this was a way of saying YES KH3 is on the way and YES we are currently developing it. If they hadn't announced it we obviously would all be assuming that KH3 was in development regardless of whether they explicitly stated it or not, but I think some people (or the more casual audience) needed/wanted an explicit confirmation and SE knew that. And honestly I've sort of forgot about KH3 for a little while what with 1.5, 2.5, and 2.8 taking the spotlight anyways.
Oh mah gawd though all the people freaking out about KH3 releasing in 2020 are hilarious. The Avengers IP was listed in one of the AAA games "coming out in the next 3 years" so I mean that's the most obvious candidate cause it didn't start development THAT long ago.

KH3 has been in development for 5 years now, and even considering the engine change, I'm expecting them to have made huge progress. We haven't seen footage for 2 years. That's a lot. And the pictures we have seen do look much more refined and polished than all of the trailers.

It really worried me, seriously. Even if I'm sure KH3's out in 2018, it worries me. But let's get real it'll probably be out before 2020.
Anyway I think its going to be out on July (7th month) 13 /18. It'd be 13 years from KH2. Does it makes sense?

Seems to me, that Square Enix is slowly going downhill company wise, they still make many different games, however with the game industry changing (dlc becoming more frequent (Paradox), mobile games and p2p), longer game creating time (Not to mention FFXV), but also all the remakes, it seems they are squeezing every little penny/cent out of our pockets. Only to release AAA games that are not fully developed (Ubisoft, EA Games and now Square Enix) storywise, gameplay and quality.
I hope Kingdom Hearts 3 won't fall into one of these bad habits the gaming industry is turning into. Could be great if they would just release a complete game like KH and KH2 were back when they first came out. Yes ofc, there were minor mistakes but not something so huge that it ruined the game.
If patience is what it takes for it to be complete, then sure I can wait until 2019~, But then I expect the game to have none to minimum flaws, if the release is even later, I would expect no flaws. More than hopeful, is downright impossible.
Let us all make peace that regardless of everything, KH III will have flaws like any other human product.
And time is sadly not an assurance of quality, a lot of games even recent took a long time and ended up being lacking in more than one area.

You're out of your mind. There's not enough time we've barely seen anything from this game. If this game was releasing 9/10 months from now, Disney would have started promoting this months ago.
And what I'm saying is I don't think they're even shooting for 2018 internally if they're not ready yet to just say '2018' in a trailer. That's how these things work at e3. If the game is being announced and coming out next year, they'll say next year not now in development. There's no reason for them to continue using now in development if they know they're shooting for 2018.
To be honest, I don't keep up with the way games are revealed nowadays, but the last trailer that we got (the one with Master Xehanort talking) gave us a pretty decent look at gameplay mechanics and a bit of story. That trailer is actually enough for me. They may need an additional trailer if it's coming out in a year's time (I believe KH3 will come out in 2018), but regarding information revealed, I think that's enough. I don't need to see every world and every plot point in a trailer. So one trailer showing how the final game will look and some new features (not worlds/plot) is good enough. I would be fine with the last trailer (before KH 3's release) being one that features extensively Olympus Coliseum, Tangled and the Big Hero 6 world and in those worlds we see the new features that are in the game.
Well, after watching the recent trailer, I'm confident that Kingdom Hearts III is going to take the 2018 release slot.
I'm still on my second~third quarter train and I hope d23 will deepen that thought. But yeah, 2018 is starting to sound more likely and not only wishful thinking.
