Square Enix has pushed the title reveal for Project Xehanort hours ahead of schedule. This new game from the Kingdom Hearts Union X team has officially been revealed as KINGDOM HEARTS Dark Road!
More information will be released after mid-February.

Also I'm a bit sad we didn't get at least a reveal of the that blurred artwork to go with this.

Unfortunately, this is a pretty shitty name considering all other games had really cool titles. But ehh, the nod towards Riku taking the middle road during CoM is kinda cool I guess. Wonder if we'll have a Eraqus side of the story called Light Road.
This is so dumb. Another X is literally an anagram of Xehanort, and the x (chi) could relate to the other mobile games, and "another key" could mean like "the key to Xehanort's past/downfall".
I'm not salty I didnt win, I'm salty at just how boring and generic the name is. But I should have known, it is a mobile game after all and not the.full fledged Xehanort game we should have gotten.
God help me, but I'm disappointed it's not something more convoluted. Also real worried with how much they've been using the term "experience".

Probably because it's not a continuation of that storyline and follows a different protagonist. Also it's going to be running alongside UX (for at least a year), so having it be called Another X would no doubt lead to some confusion.
Color me surprised. This is easily the most normal name for a KH entry. I would've replaced road with path as YMX uses it to describe his fate. I am guessing this will shows us his descent into...Baldness.
Man, the more I stare at this official title the weirder it becomes. Why not Road to Darkness? Dark Road sounds more like the name of a Command Link or a Command Style rather than a game title.

To rub even more salt in the wound, we have "An Oath to Return" as the most likely title for one of the new console games which sounds really good, and then by comparison.. Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road. Talk about dropping the quality over there. lol[/spoiler]

It's ok… I would have preferred Dark Path at the very least. I didn't even participate because my reaction to a guess the name contest was "we have to guess the name of a game in a series where the name of one game is a literally just a fraction and complete gibberish like Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance passes as ok?" But then they picked something so… normal haha. Oh well. We complain about the complicated titles, now we complain about the simple ones. Will this fandom ever be happy? lol

That would disappoint me as UX's power creep has gotten insane. I'd much rather have a new game with a fresh meta.

Prolly cuz even though it's likely being made by the UX team, they don't want it to be connected to UX. Which makes sense, as this game is gonna be set long after UX with its primary focus being Xehanort and not Union Leaders and the like.
A lot of people, myself included, assumed it would be Kingdom Hearts Another χ but I would imagine that would be bad from a marketing standpoint to name it that. Even as a fan, your knee-jerk assumption is that it is tied to the Chi Saga or is yet another rebranding. I imagine most people's reaction to that name would be "Another χ? No thanks, I didn't even like the first one."
Much better to completely differentiate the two. I like the title, even if it is a bit simple for a KH name.

Anyway the reason I believe it's the UX team making Dark Road is because they were the ones who basically announced it with that twitter post that had the Nomura sketch, which is strengthened by this bit from the 13 Darknesses Q@A.

Edit: Apparently the official translation of Q12 mentions that the game from one of the new teams is the one where ReMind's title screen is some of the groundwork?

Not really unlikely. UX seems pretty easy to manage, they probably have a generic team taking care of regular updates and the gacha side while what we refeer to the UX team (the ones responsible for the story, character design and some assets like the ost and gameplay) were moved to work on this.
For the story side, UX uses simple assets that are easy to develop and the updates come at a slow enough pace that I doubt they need much work to be done after getting the initial script from the writing team.
They also don't really make the updates 1~2 months ahead of release, they probably work on a batch that can suffice for months, maybe even a year in advance. Which frees enough time for staff to move to another property.
If anything I'd be surprised if any other team is responsible for this game.

This sounds very plausible. Either they rebrand Union Cross into Cross Road(s), or when they finish KHUx's story, the ending will be called Cross Roads. Double points if they bring back the crossroads from KH1's enidng.
Also, Dark Road sounds like a simple enough name for the mobile market general audience.

Could as well have called it KH: Lame Name and it would be just as true. Dark Road sounds like the game is about driving at night in the countryside, lol.
Though Union X is not that great as a name either. Unchained sounded more epic.

The UX team was the one who announced it. This is their project.

I tried to look up DR as programming jargon or abbreviation but I didn't find anything noteworthy.

Well the others are also kinda more IT words than programming words. So it'd kinda fit the naming schema.

The more I think about it, the more I think a similar but more fitting title would be Kingdom Hearts: Road to Darkness as a full callback to the ending of CoM.
Or if we want to keep the super weird naming convention, we could call it Kingdom Hearts Umbral Path or something xD

Heh, I wasn't really thinking of applying the idea of Disaster Recovery to the plot but curiously the plan outlined by the MoM to Luxu (the Cornerstones of the World's Rebirth, I think) is analogous to a DR plan (where essential functionality of a system is restored and data retrieved in the event of a 'disaster' of some kind effecting the IT system).
The disaster is the destruction of the world by the Keyblade war and the DR plan is sending the Dandelions to another worldline so that the light lives on and they can eventually cause the world to be reborn.
