It appears that the official website for Kingdom Hearts Dark Road has gone live, revealing new screenshots and details from the upcoming game set to launch on mobile devices soon.
The screenshots appear to reveal Xehanort and co's master alongside the key art, Scala's world logo, and Xehanort and Eraqus's in-game models.

On the original Dark Road website, the Xehanort header is labeled as Xenahort.

So my guess is the Master might be related to Brain/potentially Eraqus, just the vibe I'm getting as both Master and Brain had hat obstructions upon being revealed unless a Xehanort/Secret report has already confirmed or deconfirmed this?

Anyway I'm gonna call the old timer Master Key-nobi. He's certainly going to meet the same fate as all the old mentors he's inspired from, but I hope he has the high ground.

There's nothing to retcon. Yen Sid never said he studied alongside Eraqus and Xehanort, just that he was once a Keyblade Master like them and that they've been friends for a long time.
That these three were all students together is fanon that was repeated so much that people accepted it as canon.

Still, I didn't expect Yen Gandalf. If anything, I was expecting someone with more of a samurai aesthetic like Eraqus, cause this style of design just stands out so much in a place like Scala.
I won't lie, that was not the design I expected for Xehanort's and Eraqus's master. I do like it though. I definitely see Gandalf like everyone else, I can also see Ramuh there as well.

Lol. They probably have to scrub the whole thing to make sure there aren’t any other references to Melody of Memory.
If they're gonna follow Norse mythology, then yeah, I think they'll definitely name him Master Odin. Or they could pull a FINAL FANTASY and name him Master Ramuh.

I have to say that I like that the game already offers up a lot of answers to questions fans have been thinking about for years. I mean, it wouldn't make sense from a story perspective if we weren't given answers early, but still nice.
We seemingly now know how Xehanort left Destiny Islands, who his master is along with his companions. If the story can avoid the horrid fluff content that Unchained does, this has potential to be an entertaining experience.
I'm not holding my breath though.
Although their master turn out to be a woman would have been a breath of fresh hair, I'm really liking the new character designs from this game and the old man is not an exception. Nomura is on a roll.

Looking it up a bit, it seems like Nomura has already leaned heavily into Ragnarok with the Keyblade War lore. Ragnarok legends include a great battle between the gods sending the cosmos to the void, the world sinking into the sea, the rebirth of the world, a chess-like game played by gods, Odin seeing the future and trading his eye for wisdom, even a traitor god Loki. I am surprised we haven't been talking about Ragnarok for ages!

Honestly, this is the very reason why this game is less exciting to me than the X sub-series is. Ignoring all the Disney world and player character fluff, the actual lore of X has been one of the most intriguing and entertaining Kingdom Hearts storytelling experiences.
Who expected Ventus, Marluxia and Larxene to be from The Age of Fairytales? and who expected Maleficent to have been involved with the story, too? I really cannot see how Dark Road is going to be topping any of that but I'd love to be proven wrong.

This furthers the point of whatever happened to her, she's alive and well and is shapeshifting as someone.

Hopefully the move to a Norse theme will mean the localized DR won't need sanitized 'lifeboat' translations.

It's interesting that Nomura is incorporating both Norse and Christian mythology into the Keyblade War's history.
From a meta point of view, they're mythology that happened in the past, so it makes sense to base the past of the Universe of KINGDOM HEARTS on Norse and Christian mythology.
