Kingdom Hearts III is less than two months away and Xbox have updated their listing of the digital version of the game to reveal the file size!
Xbox lists that the game will require 35.81 GB of space on the Xbox One. This doesn’t include any potential day one patches, however. Xbox also lists that it is Xbox One X Enhanced. Digital pre-orders of Kingdom Hearts III on Xbox One comes with the Phantom Green Keyblade.

I just imagined with the amount he was fretting that it would end up being much tighter/bigger than it ended up being even after doing what they could to reduce the size.
This honestly has me a tiny bit worried. Is the game not that long after all? I know I shouldn't assume game length based on file size, but I'm just curious and worried.
I'm relieved because that means a short install time but I was definitely expecting a much bigger install.
I guess Nomura really meant it when he said they had to do a lot of converting on the cutscenes to make the file size smaller
I am worried too. I'm afraid we won't have any more disney worlds, or playable Radiant Garden and Land of Departure/Cable Town. Maybe I'm wrong (I wish I am) but the file size seems too small, unless they did a really good job at reducing it. Square Enix had significant economic losses this year derived from the Luminous Studios nonsense and maybe that affected KH3 budget and content was cut. I don't think so because the game was too far into development when the losses were reported but I don't know... I just don't want another FFXV with important plot-related content cut from the base game to be added via DLC later on. I'll be relieved if the next trailers show gameplay of new worlds, either Disney or original.
I’m not worried. Sure the size surprised me, but the worlds are larger than anything we have seen before and they are filled with things to do. There are currently 8 known Disney worlds to explore and 1 original world, all massive in their size and scale. The install size does not match the length and size of the game, because we know that they have shown off a lot and there’s plenty more that hasn’t been shown off that we know is in the game (various unseen areas in Monstropolis, second playable character scenario, stuff from leaks etc)
Surprisingly small... I was expecting at least 40-45 GB. That said, this is for Xbox One, not PS4. Fallout 76 had a nearly 50 GB patch install on PS4 but it was around 20 GB on Xbox One. So maybe the file types are different?
That all being said, what is the average file size for a 8th generation game? Just thinking that if Square's rough estimate of 40-50 hours for the main story and 80 hours for 100% completion is true and on resulted in a 36 GB install, maybe it's not that big in comparison to most modern games today. Key word: "in comparison". I have no doubt that KINGDOM HEARTS III will be a massive game, but it probably won't be as massive as most people assume it to be (ala Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, or Red Dead Redemption levels of massive).

It won't be as massive, but those games you mentioned are open world games and KH3 is not (except Gummi Ship section, I guess), it makes sense KH3 file size is not that huge. I expected more than 40 gb, though.

I wouldn’t worry too much about game length based on this. Dragon Quest XI is about 30gb on PS4 and has around 120 hours of content with post game stuff. Nomura also said we would probably need an internet connection thanks to the stuff they can’t fit on the disc, so I expect a decent sized patch on top of this.
i actually looked at the game's ms store listing yesterday and saw the file size. didn't even know it was news o_0 weird.
Yeah, nobody should be freaking out. Pretty sure Persona 5 is only like 25gb and that fluffing nutmuffler is LOOOOONG. I think we're just used to grossly bloated games, and/or seamless open worlds. Although that being said... wasn't Horizon Zero Dawn just over 38 or 39 gigs at launch?

One of my favorite youtubers, SuperButterBuns, pointed out that Monster Hunter World is only 16gb, Dark Souls 3 is 18, and Persona 5 is actually only 20.
Now, all that being said I straight up wouldn't be surprised if the game has long loading times, and a big day 1 patch to convert all those cutscenes into movies to reduce said loading times.
BTW Resident Evil 2 remake had 21 GB so I don't think 35GB is bad at all

This is not concerning to me, and I have no doubt there will be a large patch that'll kick this sucker up a substantial amount. If anything, I'm glad we know roughly what to expect file size wise.

I am thinking they either found a better method of compression, or they cut some content.
At this stage, I'm betting on a Day 1 patch that will include all the scenes-as-videos. Since balancing load times and file size for the movies of the scenes seemed to be their primary issue, the best way to get through that would be to just let the scenes play in engine unpatched, and provide the large movies via download.

It's normal for FPS games tbh, Call of Duty usually ends up being 70 GB at launch and there is plenty of updates that add things.
I believe Black Ops 3 is 150+ GB at the moment.
Reminds me of when I used to judge games in the PS1 era on how many discs they came on.
39 gigs is pretty good to be honest. Just cause 3 was around that size I believe at launch and that is a gigantic game. There's so many different factors that go into the size, I wouldn't worry about it equating to length or size of the actual game.

Halo 5 probably cracks a hundred with it's DLC. No wonder some game companies want to switch to streaming, physical media isn't cutting it anymore.
I don't know anything about video game files sizes but Im not worried at all. The game will be huge regardless and to me it's not about how much stuff so much as how well it's done

The worlds are going to be very small. That comment about only seeing 30% of Toy Box is likely wrong. Dragon Quest is 30 and it's extremely linear,has like 7 songs and less than half of dialogue is voiced. I'm expecting a 20-25 hour long game. It will likely be the shortest main game.

I'm guessing audio is the culprit rather than actual size of the game. Most developers say audio and textures are the biggest culprits.
edit: Being the culprit as in they compressed it.

Since we don’t have any actual information about the length of the game from a reputibile source (a random PR member anonymously quoted by a reporter who was introduced to the KH series for the first time really doesn’t count) you’re free to believe that. I do hope that the game positively surprises you and that you enjoy yourself :)

Well it depends on the fan, if KH3 is being hyped as another KH game then people would be pleasantly surprised by it. If the hype is looking at it as the best game of the century, then it's a given that some people are going to be dissapointed by the end result. Depends on how someone looms at it.
9 DDD sized worlds would be extremely underwhelming. Thankfully, just the Toy Story area that we've seen, is bigger.
Trying to guess how long the game will be based on this file size is a waste of time. File compression is a thing.

First off, life isn't fair. Game devs can do whatever they want and as consumers we have to accept it or not purchase their content.
If Square-Enix only wanted to have 8 worlds, then that's what we're gonna get. No amount of complaining and bitching will change that.
Secondly, there are still 2 more trailers to come this month so who knows. Maybe another world (or two) could be revealed. Nothing is for certain until comfirmed.

There were roughly three worlds in each phase of development. Early development, mid-development, and late stage development. Doesn’t include worlds finished or work that hadn’t really begun in earnest.

Knowing they were having trouble fitting everything on the disc and Nomura making a statement encouraging fans to have an online connection, I don’t think it’s a stretch that they may have needed to split a significant portion of the game into a separate download.

Pretty sure Nomura said the animations for lipsync in multiple languages took up way too much space. I'm pretty certain that's the major reason he gave for why the game wouldn't launch with language options for voice.

The thing about Spyro was it was compressed and there was about 17GB of data that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. You have the 33 or whatever GB on the disc and the 19 GB patch. That’s only 52GB yet the final count is 67GB.
Osaka probably did the same thing, just without a patch. The size will go up when the game has copied over. If there was additional downloads required to actually access the end of the game then that would have been reflected on the box art as well.

Look at Nier Automata. That game is maybe 30-35 hours in total when you're doing the main story, but it's considered to be one of the best JRPGs of all time. Persona 5 took me about 130-140 hours if memory serves, and that's also one of my favorite games. Spider-Man PS4, another new favorite, is about 20 hours or so. Story Completion Time doesn't really equal "great story", it just means that it requires that amount of time for you to get to the beginning to the end. Of course.
What matters most is that they nail the storytelling from beginning to end and keep the pacing consistent. I wouldn't want to do a bunch of boring missions just to pad out the story completion time, but I also wouldn't want it to be bare bones and lacking, either. As long as it's meaty enough to keep people satisfied while balancing the pace well, I think KH3 will be fine. From what it looks like, there's going to be a lot to do in the game anyway, so we're good.

Yeah, it's likely that they have compressed the game and it'll unpack itself and get bigger when it installs. That's been a thing on PCs for a while and if they were worried about the size being too big it makes sense.
Even if it isn't compressed, keep in mind that the biggest things tend to be things like video clips, audio, etc. So file size isn't that well correlated with game length.
I don't think the size of the game is anything to worry about, it's just weird that they said they were struggling to fit it all on the disc and it ends up quite small compared to a lot of high end games.

Yea a lot of times they install compressed then they get unpackaged. Or like in the Xbox's case it has a dedicated processor for compressed audio.

Pre-loads have not been cracked yet and we are like 5 years into this gen. We are good.
I doubt the pre-load is the full size at all. I'm just hoping the patches and all are included on the disc.

There's way too much story to cover, so I'm guessing the story will definitely be more than 20 hours.

Don’t be surprised if it’s north of 10GB though. That’s fairly normal.
