TGS 2008: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days Update
Hands-on with the show's most obtusely named game.
by Daemon HatfieldOctober 8, 2008 - A few levels of the single-player game in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days were playable on the show floor here at TGS. From a mission select screen players choose from several worlds that are floating out in space. Once you've made your selection you jump into some 3D action RPG mayhem with one of several AI partners.
The A button swings your keyblade but we found the attack to be a bit sluggish. Our hero, Roxas, also has the ability to double jump. Your AI partners seem to fare pretty well on their own. You can always hear their footsteps to tell where they are in relation to you. Tapping the R button will snap the camera behind you. In open environments the camera doesn't pose a problem, but in narrow indoor corridors there were many occasions when we couldn't see where we were going or what we were attacking. Combat includes an auto-target mechanic. Nearby enemies will display a target icon and as long as you swing in their direction you'll hit them.
Level 1 concluded with a boss fight against a giant suit of armor. He would perform a ground pound technique that would cause his vulnerable head to roll to the ground. The boss of the second area was a large, shadow bull thing who slammed the ground with his giant palms.
Spending quality time with your friends seems to be a central theme in 358/2 Days. Roxas always has a partner fighting alongside him. After defeating the knight in level 1, Roxas and his pal Axel enjoyed a popsicle while overlooking the town. Disney had very little presence in the demo we played. At the very end of level 2, the Beast from Beauty and the Beast showed up.
- Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep has seen no change in release date, keeping its tentative 2009 release window for Japan
- There isn't much of a change in the trailer from what was shown at DKS3713
- Some gameplay footage for Aqua is shown however, and she is said to move "tricky, and really cool"
From Famitsu.com's Quick Report:
Introducing battle scenes of Aqua, one of the main characters. Like in Sora's Final Form in KHII, she floats and uses the keyblade without touching it. Event scenes of Aqua in Cinderella's world and Snow White's world are shown.
- There is a scene in the trailer where an Organization Member is in the King's Room, though whether or not this is in the data world, or the real world is uncertain.
From Famitsu.com's Quick Report:
A person wearing the same type of coat as a member of Organization XIII appears, and from under its feet, the bugs spread. In this scene, the person says: "The world is damaged." After that, a trailer for Kingdom Hearts Mobile is shown. This enigmatic line is inserted: "A door connected to the secrets from this world."
Demo Impression from Geemaga Blog:
It was simple, but at the DoCoMo Booth you could play a demo of Kingdom Hearts Coded. Nevertheless, it was in a little known spot at the show, so I could get a clear file and play as Sora easily. The stage of the game was from the first Kingdom Hearts, it was nice to play with Sora after such a long absence. The heartless, the design of the stage, even Sora's familar jumping motion was very similar to the previous game, so it was had a good nostalgic feel to it.
