Currently the Japan-only prototype test for KINGDOM HEARTS Missing-Link is in progress, and Square Enix has shared brand new information regarding the upcoming mobile game.
- You can select between GPS movement or Pad movement depending on your playstyle
- GPS movement
- The character moves when the player walks
- AP can be obtained in battles, etc.
- Battles can be automated in "handsfree mode"
- Pad movement
- Moving characters with a virtual pad
- AP is required for battles, obtaining treasure chests, etc.
- Content will be released step-by-step during the prototype test
- Today's message: Let's get jewels in the gift quest - Let's make a lot of Lv.20 pieces

Character customization being extremely detailed makes my heart sing. It makes my Kingdom Heart sing. I really, really hope they release this game on PC like Genshin, because I very much don't wanna play this on a tiny phone screen.

Interesting. So KH1 heartless confirmed in the game. Which means, they had to be remade with new models and everything. We are moving closer and closer to my dream to see past titles updated on Unreal Engine. ?
I will have to finally get my phone battery replaced to play this and I have no regrets. GPS mode for life

As Antifa Lockhart said, it’s against SE’s Terms of Service for the prototype test. If we see more we’ll share here but don’t expect anything until SE officially releases footage and content.
I hope I can play it on Bluestacks, I'm just worried that i'd get banned.

It has a game pad mode so I imagine you should be able to play that way.

Yeah, that was the main issue with UX. It was too much filler that wasted more time. They really should work to try and have the story planned out and ready. Filler can be inserted as they gauge the popularity of the game if they really want to put it in for some reason.

There are some images and videos of Missing Link already out there, not sure if I should link them here. The handcrafted scenes look quite nice, I'm not so sure about the GPS derived landscapes.

Since the trailer I've always been confident in the game.
When the Japanese testers started sharing their impressions I was even more so.
But now that I've seen with my own eyes some gameplay I can only say that the game has the potential to be what we all wanted from KHUX, and everything will depend on the speed and quality of the updates.
I fully trust Nomura and Ruiko Fukazawa on the plot, so that doesn't worry me.

You can link here. We just aren’t reporting it in our opening post because we would be liable to source, thus putting targets on the people releasing footage and videos, but links are fine.
Perhaps I phrased it incorrectly? I mean that they should have the whole story and those updates done and ready, and then when the game launches, based on the popularity of the game and how much money it is bringing in, they can add filler in-between the main story beats to extend the game’s lifespan and cut back on it when necessary. But the story would already be done and ready. Filler can be entertaining if done right. I think DOOFF is a good example of it.
UX was done where they used bland filler to artificially extend the game out so they could catch up on working on the main story and drag players along to pay into their economy.

Nope. That was a mistranslation that is running wild.
I don't mind the graphical fidelity, I just mean how mobile/gacha/f2p/etc. games are inundated with a million things you have to train your brain to ignore because they're just parts of an addiction algorithm template instead of something the devs really created.
Of course there was no way this was going to be anything but that.

Well, like I said, there is footage of Scala which is genuinely gorgeous. It's really a stunning looking world with NPC chilling around.
Battle maps range from blah to great.
The maps for the real world could be better but I also think that they probably don't care too much since it is already pulling location data and is probably taxing on the phones to begin with.

So we may see these characters in cutscenes with KH3 style graphics as I’d be surprised if they made them just for the trophy things. Or B.) there could be another project using these character models that they’re borrowing from.
Whichever way, now these assets exist and could be used for future console games.

Square isn't afraid to make stuff that has limited uses -- after all, Daybreak Town in Back Cover was never seen again and likely never will be at this point. I wouldn't get too excited over the implications of the models.

I pretty much believe that Daybreak Town will be seen in the future as a Union Cross remake might still happen (it was on the nvidia leak). In terms of assets that were not used a lot, they were most likely in KH3 where a lot of assets were made for cutscenes only (Hollow Bastion, YenSid tower), but most likely with the intent to visit in the future. In the old graphics era, assets were overused.

Wished they'd put this kind of effort & budget into a Switch KH game. Man, forget speculating on UX/DR getting console ports, How the hell would a port of ML even work when it's inevitably shuts down?
What makes me desperately want to play this game is the character customization. I already loved it in UX, and seeing/reading that it's extremely detailed in this game make me very happy. I'm a sucker for character creators. The geo-location stuff, I'm not really fond of. Will definitely be using the pad movements. I just wonder, if they're already giving us the option between irl geo location, and simple in-game controls for movement... why not just give us the option to disable geo-location altogether? Just create basic maps or create a map randomizer, and tha should do the job, no?

When it was announced Nomura said "its a geo location game, but i hate that so i made it so you dont have to do that at all actually". The answer is probably Square Enix wanted geo location because this game exists to entrap people into becoming microtransaction whales and geo location did well to spread Pokemon Go. The reason it's optional at all is simply Nomura's preference, which is the absolute most he's allowed to meddle with it.
Latest news seems to be that for the prototype, they implemented 70% of the game’s functions, 50% of its UI, and none of its story. Also Nomura is an Android user. From the sounds of it, there’s probably a proper closed beta still coming that will include both iOS and Android.
Also, they really gotta do something about the fact that they’re still using the Dark Road Twitter account, lol
EDIT: It’s not super clear here whether he’s talking about development overall, or the prototype specifically (re: percentages), I’m seeing mixed interpretations. My impression is it just means what’s been implemented in the prototype, not necessarily what’s been developed. Really frustrating that these dev updates are for a Japanese audience only, leads to all manner of misinterpretation and mixed messaging.

I think that was a mistranslation. The percentages you mentioned were meant to be referring to what they put in the actual prototype test, not the actual state of development. I don't think the game is that far out.

Oh wow, that does look really good. I have to agree with Chaser, I almost wish they did make this a proper console game, as it looks like it honestly could be one. Still, very impressive for a mobile game. Really hope this one is more easily playable than UX was.

We rarely use mobile to refer to phones and more often use it as a genre signifier. "Cell game" doesn't sound good. We often refer to mobile games as "phone games" though
