Oh man. This might just be the best opening to any KH game we've seen yet. The animation is BEAUTIFUL. And the feels at the very end... I think i'm actually tearing up.

Ugggh I am not ready for KH3

I just realized that I'm so fucking ready for KH3.
I swear to god I need at least a rough release window by the time 1.5/2.5 releases.

Also, that is very clearly the Disney castle from the opening of a majority of their films. It symbolizes all the Disney World's falling into darkness without having to show several locations at once as Audo also pointed out. You see that castle and you immediately think Disney.

That Mickey + Aqua vs Ven + Terra scene so gooooood. It brings back such fond memories of Birth by Sleep. It seems pimpanort hasn't chanced :P

Who knew that TAV like to go skydiving when they're not fighting the forces of darkness?

I guess it pretty much confirmed that Sora is going to save Aqua. Although, that's really no surprise to anyone.

You know what I find odd is how Aqua is shown protecting Terra and Ven AFTER her journey in the darkness. It makes me wonder if the reason Terra is missing is because between KH1 and BBS something happened to Terra, and she managed to protect his heart somehow keeping out of Xehanort's reach. That would explain why Terra has seemingly vanished and why the second time Terranort tried to split himself it actually worked.

I mean when Riku's heart was ejected it wound up in the realm of darkness. Maybe it is the same, maybe Terra's heart was in the realm of darkness and Aqua actually meets the honest to god Terra. Maybe she shields him from whatever is in that place. And then Terra vanishes behind, his heart called back to the realm of light upon Xemnas's destruction. Just like that Aqua would see her best friend leave her in the dark alone against his will, ripped away from one another just like Kairi and Sora in KH1.

I just see it as reference to BBS' Ending

Wow! That was truly great! The whole time I was in awe at the artwork in the characters and I was holding my fingers crossed tightly for the Sora from the present to show, even just a little... And then the ending came... Yes! It's Sora, reaching into the vast water for Aqua's hand.
Now that's a cool thought! Awesome! I could see part of Sora's distorted figure in Aqua's eye, he was there for real! Sweet! It's perfect really, Aqua as in water is reaching for the sky as in Sora, looking to find a light to guide her out of the depths of Darkness. Can't wait to see if there's a secret clip where Sora has role at the end of 0.2, that would make my dream come true!
All in all, great opening! Thank you! ^o^

i think it's just artistic license for the opening.

BUT if we do get rescuing Aqua out of the way then she can play a larger role in KH3 perhaps as a Kairi traveling companion.

The Castle looks an awful lot like Cinderella's Castle from Disney World but it can also be an upgraded Sleeping Beauty's Castle(Disneyland).

They took a lot of artistic liberties with the events of BbS and whatnot, but it's still absolutely fantastic.

I noticed they went out of their way to line up the lyrics with what's happening sometimes. Like at the end when she shields Ven and Terra and they're reaching out to her, it's the "Please, oh baby! Don't go!" line. And there are plenty of others.

I exploded from excitement.

OH SWEET LAWDY IT LOOKS SO DIDDLYING GORGEOUS LEGITIMATELY FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW AAAAAAA

This is definitely my favorite OP since KH2 (which I also have fond memories of watching on YouTube following the Japanese release). The imagery is stunning and the connection between Aqua and Sora is presented as this emotional through line so that we're already anticipating their meeting and what it's going to mean for Aqua. I think that's the most beautiful thing about this cinematic. It places Aqua firmly in the central role and defines her journey as it played out for her, rather than as an extension of other characters' (Sora's, Terra's, Mickey's) arcs. It also does a great job of expressing the range of her character: pensive and somewhat lonely, but proud to be a part of something bigger than herself; also a pure badass Keyblade master when necessary, and willing to go to any length to protect her friends. The scene where she shields Terra and Ven with magic and slowly drifts away from them with a sad smile...I mean, might be OK in a little while.

Also way to reinvigorate my Ray of Hope Remix habit Square. I spent weeks trying to kick it with Fantôme. Now I need this track all the time.

the biggest thing hurting TAV as a trio + development, imo, was the need for them to fit in a prequel where all their stories ended tragically. so characters had to act dumb or uncommunicative in order to make the plot work. but, free of that, i think they'd have a really good chance of becoming a well developed trio in kh3 and on.

It's so beautifuuuul like just... the graphics... are beyond gorgeous and Aqua looks so beautiful and I just loved everything about it and this gives me life. Also that Sora reaching out to Aqua scene just. Yes. 0.2 is going to be so amazing and I might not survive it.

It is absolutely gorgeous! Every slight detail is amazing and I felt a little bit inside me die. The only thing bothering me is how on earth does Venitas suddenly have blue eyes. I'm not quite getting that. But other than that CAN'T WAIT!

Honestly I have to agree the only thing that sours me feelings about that sky diving scene is that TAV's friendship was handled so poorly. Like they make it seem like MX split them apart which in a way he did but it only worked because they were all terrible to one another. Well really Aqua was just terrible at her job and jumping to almost baseless conclusions while Ven treated her terrible and Terra was mean to both of them. And this doesn't...sorry break into a BBS rant again. Anyway the scene is so cute but a part of my mind keeps saying/wondering do they deserve it? Aqua does no question but I dunno about Ven and Terra...they haven't really done much as far as we know. Especially Terra I feel like he needs to be making some real ammends for that last minute backpedal that screwed them all over.

It's pretty safe to assume that KH3 isn't coming out in 2017 now if they're releasing both 2.8 and 1.5 + 2.5 in 2017. As a company they're not going to saturate the market with three games in a year. I think most people will agree that the most likely time from the little we know now is that the best guess is spring 2018.

Can't always have a party right? Yeah I'm thinking late spring 2018 maybe, kinda depends if they've got something else for us in store.

I still don't see how all of you can expect KH3 to come out in 2017 when we have so little information regarding 3. We have only 2 new Disney worlds confirmed, and I doubt they'll be able to promote everything within a year (/10 months or whatevs)

All the time they didn't talk about KH3 was time spent solely focusing on developing it. Instead of having to worry about showing off at E3 or other events, making an E3 demo (which takes a ridiculous amount of dev time and resources), and so on, means the game has basically been developed full steam and uninterrupted.

Nomura has already said there will be a lot of KH3 news in 2017. From a marketing standpoint, you tend not to do that unless your game is going to release that year. The KH3 announcements after 2.8 will likely contain a few new worlds, and then leading up to release they could focus on/reveal a world or two a month leading up to release. Then we'd have plenty of info?

Seeing Ventus' blue eyes instead of the gold eyes while wearing Vanitas' suit is kind of unsettling.

When I initially hear this song I really wasn't a fan of it but it's sort of grown on me a little after watching the official intro. Still not one of my favorite choices but it's quite suiting. Also ohh man that Sora hand grab at the end! :D

This intro makes a more compelling case to care about Aqua, Terra, and Ven than Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep did.

I'm sorry but I've had a bad day and when I finally watched this, I cried. The music likewise, I kind of like the remix (but I'm not a major fan of it). But either way, I freaked out when I saw this. True on what you said Muke, but I really just don't care if it seems sort of unrealistic cause either way this is what made my whole day.

If it releases in 2017, then it's gonna happen late in the year. 2.8 got delayed yes, but not because it was falling behind in development or running behind schedule, it was to make sure there weren't any conflicts with FF15. If 2.8 had still been releasing this December, KH3 in December 2017 seems pretty logical to me.

If not that, then they'd probably only set it back a little bit like they did with 2.8.

Nomura said it was gonna be a BIG year for Kingdom Hearts. I think 3 games, even though one is just a port of previously released ones, is pretty darn big. Aren't a lot of figures also getting released next year?

That hand means two things from what I have seen.

Him most likely saving Aqua from the RoD, and the passage of time. Also considering the fact that in the battle scene, it was Sora's Dive to the Heart to appear shows the connection he has with all of them.

KH3D has Sora unlocking the memory of meeting Aqua during his nightmare.

Blown away by that opening. Completely blown away. Tons of symbolism. Too much hype. I have yet to see this video besides on my phone, but I cannot wait to play this game, (and the remasters).

I kinda felt like meh with this opening, something keeps throwing me off. XD It's probably because I watched the teaser too many times or something, lol. I'll probably have to watch this one a lot to get used to it, I guess.

I know I should be more optimistic--because so far everything is pointing to Kairi actually being there in III and more important than ever before--but I've just been burnt too many times at this point, tbh. (Like, remember when Kairi was actually on the cover for Coded--so we all thought she'd be in it--but she wasn't at all, and they later removed her from said cover?) So I'm not going to believe anything about Kairi actually being treated well (for once) in KHIII, until I actually have the game firmly in my hands;) (Or until we get trailer stuff that maybe has a lot of her in it, or confirms her to be a party member or playable character or something.)

I'm guessing Ven-nitas's eyes are blue because of an error, or they thought the blonde hair and yellow eyes looked weird together and changed it.

Or a subtle statement that Ven is closer to being saved than Terra.

WOW I'm late but here I woke up to this amazing opening sequence and I got to see a lot of foreshadowing of what's to happen next which is epic and beautiful at the same time. I loved the scene where the trio has a moment together falling by the ocean.

This scene here really warmed my heart

Am I the only one who wished that I could splash in that beautifully rendered ocean after seeing the first 20 seconds.

I'm too hyped up to wait patiently for 2.8 to be released thanks to this opening. I wonder if Ventus & Terra will be boss battles in the game or Mickey will be a party member/playable. The Trinity Skydiving also gives me hope in that the trio will be restored.

Sora walks into a blinding room and sees a man sitting in a revolving chair. He slowly turns with a cat version of Tetsuya Nomura on his lap,
"Hello" he says "you may be wondering who I am, well let me just tell you this is ALL my creation"

I'm not sure if you've guys have ever had a close but shaky relationship, but I have. I have a cousin who I love to death. We grew up together as sisters basically (our mother's are twins). As we grew older... well, she made decisions that I didn't agree with. We 'argued' so to speak, but we were still best friends. We were still cousins. Two pods in a pea.

As we got older, it only got worse though. We didn't argue, we just didn't stay in each others company. Do I still love her? Of course. That didn't stop things from wedging in-between us to a point where people might think we're complete strangers if we walk down the same street. If ever presented with the opportunity to help her for real, I would jump right in.

I just relate to Aqua so much. I have always felt BbS could have been done better. They could have done so many small things to better tie their stories together or to show how much they care about each other. It should have been properly developed for the PS2 so that it could realize its full potential.

Do I think it's unrealistic that they seemed to turn on each other so quickly? Not really. It's a condensed version of what happened between my cousin and I. Unlike TAV, my cousin and I had the luxory of falling apart by ourselves, but an acting negative force planting ideas and events out at every turn to make them turn against each other. Their friendship is the least problematic part of BbS.

Yeah, honestly, I think BBS did a fine enough job portraying their friendship. I don't think I'd be seeing as many strong reactions to this opening if BBS had failed to make people care about them or their friendship. Yeah there are some issues, of course, but largely, they seemed okay to me. Every trio has their first game being about that friendship being tested and somewhat falling apart only for them to be made stronger and more resolved by the end. Remember KH1, lol? Sora and Riku seemed even less like friends than TAV do, and look at Sora and Riku now. It was through being tested and almost brought to the brink that their friendship could rebuild itself into something stronger. And I think the same thing happens by the end of BBS, where literally all of them recommit themselves to their friends and sacrifice everything for them.

I actually wonder if BC will get an Opening, too.

I thought it was confirmed Sora'd be getting an outfit change sometime during the story? In fact, the new screenshots seem to imply he'll be getting his outfit in Olympus because there is footage of him with his old outfit and his new outfit there. Zeus seems like the kind of guy to give out new outfits. As long as they aren't golden.

So, why is Mickey in his BBS Outfit?

Now that the full opening has been revealed, I guess we can surely say that the tone of the remix and the name of it are really fitting. Ray of Hope truly is what the opening is about. Despite all the horrors and hardships Aqua faces, there is always a friend by her side and hope for salvation, especially with Sora`s reaching hand at the end.

I am bit sad that Sqaure released the opening this early. Part of me feels like the greatness of 0.2 was revealed a bit too soon.

Ohh, right. I was one of the few who didn't like the Remix, but with this Opening... it's just perfect.

You know what I really love about this opening? I think it finally helped some people see what I saw in Aqua's story.

People complained that "her story was nothing other than Ven and Terra Ven and Terra, where is her struggle?"

But her friends are everything to her. It's not that she doesn't have her own story, her story is her friends, her attempts to help and save them, and her own decent into darkness. It's no different than Sora in KH1 looking for his buddies while having some adventures along the way. In fact, their stories are almost exactly the same, I don't understand why Aqua is sometimes criticized for it while Sora is praised.

This opening did an excellent job focusing on her and what happened to her friends and how it affected her. Of course, their stories ultimately affected her story... but that's just how plots work? If something big happens, such as getting possessed by the enemy, doesn't affect SOMETHING, what is the point?

Whoa. First time we've seen Xehanort since we lost Leonard.

Aqua's personal enemy in BBS was Male stupidity amirite. Men are the worse.

I feel like people prefer Sora because he has two great characters to play off in the form of Donald and Goofy. Riku has a nice dynamic with Mickey, and Sora himself of course, so fans like him as well. Theae characters get fleshed out because they consistently have other characters to bounce off of and grow with... There's nothing to dislike about Aqua, but she's always alone and never says anything interesting to anyone, and talks to herself a lot which is always a nono. If Aqua had a sidekick in BBS, some funny or interesting character to consistently mesh with, she would be far more interesting-- If Aqua had been Stitch's proverbial Lilo throughout the entirety of BBS, lots of fun stuff would have gone down in each world.

It's not really that Aqua lacks a conflict it's that the game never focused on it. Like 0.2 is the first time we are actually seeing aqua's feelings and suffering be addressed. BBS the story just kinda never took a real moment to focus on Aqua there is always a Terra or Ven related thing taking focus instead. Like Radiant Garden is the worst of this because she gets called awful and just kinda takes it, neither of her friends explain anything to her, Terra like completely avoids a perfectly valid question, and next time she sees Ven it's like nothing between them happened. It's also clear they wanted her to have all the big villains as part of her story but...

This results in her having way more vanitas than Ventus but the conflict is always about/focused on Ventus.
A very random and anti-climactic battle with Braig and its Ven's angry glare in all this he will remember and constantly reference not anything about Aqua
A super anti-climactic fight between her and MX seeing as she and MX haven't even so much as shared a single conversation the entire gane

There is also a real issue in that none of the conflicts Aqua does have get focused. Her story is clearly meant to be a coming of age story, a young women graduating and stepping into the real world with a whole new host of responsibilities and creates a real divide between her and her non-grad friends. That is why we have all that Destiny island stuff where Awua basically not so subtly indicates she is regretting her life, the keyblade, and her position of master. But there is so little build up it comes almost out of no where and then promptly is dropped. Which makes this big decisive moment where she proudly declares herself master feel weightless because they spent even less time showing this like 180 of a view developed in the last like hour since she was on destiny island.

I don't view these things as dropped, it's as you say, it is never quite focused on in BbS. It was never resolved.

They introduced many of the things she'll probably be encountering in 0.2. Balance of the light and darkness, more confidence in the strength of her heart which allowed her to become a Master in the first place. Heck, even the destiny of the little island children she decided she didn't want to get involved in the mess she considers the keyblade nearing the end as per her convo with AtW. Even her conflict with Xehanort might be more direct this time because he clearly wants something from her (still wondering about the mysterious talking armor and Xemnas referring to it as friend).

I feel if BbS had a better script writer or even if it had been completely developed for the PS2, these themes in Aqua's story would have been more pronounced, but they still wouldn't have been resolved. It still would have ended with unresolved drama between her friends, the enemy still somehow succeeding despite her best efforts, and her still wandering around in the dark realm or lost somewhere else. She still would be borderline giving up on life even when she's accepted her title as Master.

Given Nomura had concepts for BbSv2 planned right after BbS (the secret ending for it), I don't think Aqua's unresolved unfocused character arcs are a mistake or not even necessarily a sign of bad writing (though as always, it COULD have been done better). Her story just isn't complete and BbS was her backstory. It could have all been written in flashbacks.

If we had never gotten to play BbS and we were just introduced to Aqua one day with her backstory already written: "Master Xehanort and his dark apprentice Vanitas possessed her best friends. She was forced to fight and defeat them, hoping to free them from their entrapment. Ventus fell into a deep sleep, never to wake up again, and in efforts to save Terra, Aqua sacrificed herself, willingly falling into the darkness in Terra's place. I don't think people would have these complaints. I mean, I guess they are justified since her story can be written in a summary like this, but my overall view is that her story was never bad, her conflict didn't start until Master Xehanort really started jacking things up. Even this opening shows that, her real story started when Ven and Terra's ended.

Now all the stuff she didn't learn in BbS will test her relentlessly in the RoD. I suppose I can see peoples problems with that, that her story wasn't told in BbS itself, but her story there was keeping her friends out of trouble and she failed even though it was completely not her fault. Her real story now is all the baggage from that coupled with revisiting the small lessons that didn't seem to have much affect in BbS. In my opinion, as always.

Does 0.2 take place after or before aqua meets ansem I been wondering for that while

Loved the little spin Aqua does in the fighting scene in the opening while she is on air. It`s pretty similar/identical to her movements in BBS and I like how they keep these little character things even in the opening.

I figured she meant "too much" in the like "it's kinda over-the-top happy/slightly-cheesy" way, not too much as in the affection between them.

But maybe I read that wrong.

Why would anyone be salty about the beautiful amazingness that is 0.2 opening, I'm not even a fan of Terra and Ven but I absolutely loved every scene in it. The falling from the sky scene looked great and was adorable as heck, just look at their smiles. It just looked really genuine and good.

I actually think I have a pretty good idea as to why we don't see the Clock Tower trio in this opening even though we already see Sora, Riku, and Kairi for a few seconds: 0.2 is Aqua's story, and she's already interacted with the Destiny Islands trio while she hasn't even met Roxas, Lea, and Xion yet.
