New Kingdom Hearts 3 screenshots shows off Olympus and new Drive Form!

During Paris Games Week, Shinji Hashimoto went on stage to discuss news about the Kingdom Hearts series. Alongside the announcement of Sora coming to World of Final Fantasy this winter, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX heading to PlayStation 4 March 2017, and the opening of Kingdom Hearts 0.2 -A Fragmentary Passage-, Square Enix also released brand new screenshots of Kingdom Hearts III.
In these two brand new screenshots, you can see Sora in a brand new Drive Form called "Guard Form". The shield shown in the first image is transformed from the Mt. Olympus Keyblade. In the second screenshot, the image of Sora in another Drive Form features a Keyblade from an unrevealed world so the image has been altered and will not look like that in the actual game.
More information about Kingdom Hearts III will be released after the launch of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.

It seems drive forms will also be about changing the shape of the keyblade. Guard form changed the keyblade into a shield, while the red power form turned the keyblade into a giant hammer. This adds a lot of variety in play styles :)
I'm WAY too excited. This is always what I've wanted from Olympus, and to know that they're finally giving us that is just so exciting.
It's interesting that drive forms are coming back, but exciting nonetheless. I absolutely love that Guard Form is a departure from the standard drives, and is more than Sora just wielding more keyblades. This game is going to be loaded with mechanics and new ways to play. If they can manage to balance it all, the gameplay experience is going to be so customizable for players. It's hard to express the hype in words. I absolutely cannot wait.
While I can't say that I am too thrilled about the stupid Drive Forms coming back, the screenshots look quite neat, especially since we can probably now count it as confirmed that we will visit actual Mount Olympus this time around.
The background scenery certainly looks like the Realm of the Gods.

While I never hated Drive Forms (was just kinda boring as a whole) I do find it slightly odd to see Drive Forms return. But they now seem to be tied to Keyblades (so the wacky transformations are from Drive then) which piques my interest.

It's not a hammer transformation, they edited the Keyblade because it's from a yet unrevealed world (thx to void). :D

I really love that we are actually getting to go to Olympus for a change instead of being stuck in the Colosseum with limited exploration. And the game looks gorgeous! Considering this keyblade has a shield form, I wonder if one of the other keyblades has a staff form of some kind?
I want this game SO badly! I seriously hope that we, at the very least, get a release window next year if the game isn't scheduled for a winter 2017 release.

Yea the forms kind of giving more Keyblade Transformations makes me more okay with them returning...I hope there aren't many and they are more like this, i.e. Guard Form, not like "Oh use two Keyblades and do 20 million kick flips in the air and destroy half a bosses HP" Form like in KH2 lol.
Also every time they show gameplay that is all about Sora and ignores the party members bums me out. Really hope they are competent and useful in this game again.
I kind of dig Guard Form's pants....is the second picture another form? Like the jacket color is super similar but I think it may be more red, but the pants are different again.

I'm very glad to see Drive Forms returning! I loved them in KH2.
Everyone seems to be assuming that the Drive forms are going to trigger keyblade transformations. That seems a bit presumptuous. We probably shouldn't assume that. It's entirely possible that keyblade transformations and Drive Forms are separate mechanics and they just happen to be showing both in these images. I'm not saying that drive forms won't have inherent keyblade transformations to go with them. I'm just saying it really could go either way. Everyone is just getting way ahead of themselves and assuming.
On another note, the second keyblade transformation that isn't really revealed has got me thinking. I wonder what that could be... the way Sora is holding it could be some kind of clue.

Exciting stuff! Can't wait to see what the actual function of the drive forms are. Keyblade transformations would be cool for sure.

Well, this pretty much confirms that we´ll be visiting Olympus in KHIII. The surroundings look very cool, Sora looks amazing and I can`t wait to find out more about new drive forms and keyblade transformations. :D
I am shocked to see all the people talking about Olympus when it was already confirmed. They showed art for an Olympus "heaven" map at D23 a few years ago, it was just not released to the public.

He theoretically could do that via Keyblade Transformation by splitting/transforming a single Keyblade into two smaller ones (kinda like Cloud's Fusion Swords from FF Advent Children), but I agree that once Ventus gets restored it should be the end of actual dual-wielding of two different keyblades.

I don't want dual wielding because we've already had it, and KH2 did it so well; I doubt they could ever out-do KH2's smooth dual wielding. The idea of Sora using new weapons is much better. KH3 needs to be polished, but it doesn't need to do KH1 or KH2 over again, it needs it's own flavor.

Maybe they are completely separate but you have to admit that they seem to be able to affect each other. Maybe the drive forms don't trigger transformations but alter them. I say this because we've seen the Olympus Keyblade's transformation before, and that was into a chariot (although it did look a lot like the shield form when it was making the wheels, so maybe this is just a mid transformation shot).

Ooh, i really like the idea of forms based on character build traits. Id really like a continuance of that theme.
Mage Form= keyblade to staff (I'd say guns but that one keyblade already does that. Maybe a bow and magic arrows)
Speed Form= keyblade to twin daggers?
That covers some basic RPG stats; speed, magic, attack, defense. What else?

About the dual wielding, I wouldn't really like it either.

Not sure if I'm happy to have drive forms back, I love them in KH2 but eh, there's already so much going on in KH3. Sora's clothes look good though, love those pants.

Nah, it probably just looks like so much to us right now, but hopefully it'll be like in KH2, where you didn't necessarily need summons or limits, but they were rather useful if used right.

What's everyone's beef with Drive Forms? They look like they're tied to the keyblade transformations that we've already seen, anyway. I recall someone saying that each keyblade in KHIII would have its own set of transformations.
Very interesting indeed! I'm glad to see that drive forms will be making a come back in certain ways. Hell I'm glad we managed to get any KH3 news at all today. I know there was several important pieces of new information but I'm glad to see what they've unveiled here. Seriously psyched and can't wait to see a new trailer though that's for sure. For KH3 that is. The .2 intro was very good.
I'd rather KH3 do its own thing with Drive Forms. Instead of dual-wielding (AND GOD FORBID TRIPLE-WIELDING), Sora should use other weapons. It's a neat and unique experience, compared with re-utilizing an idea that should stay as a one-off experience in KH2. And closing on dual-wielding, it should be used as a cinematic feature, be it during a Reaction Command, or cutscene.
Meh, these new designs are something my little brother would be more into I think. XD I think if Kairi was playable she'd have the kind of designs I might like, just a guess though. XD

Ven's heart was the reason Roxas was able to dual wield; Sora's Drive Forms draw on his capacity to connect his heart with those of his friends which is the basis of his dual wielding. There's no reason he can't continue to do so once Ven's heart has been returned. Sora's ability to open his heart to others is one of his defining character traits.
Speaking of which, I think it would be neat if a new Drive Form was unlocked with every character Sora "saves," as he forms a strong bond with them or comes to understand their existing connection. Just as Disney characters often give Sora keychains as a symbol of their friendship, Drive Forms and the powers associated with them could work as a representation of how Sora becomes stronger and grows as a character with every connection he makes.

We've also had magic, summons, the world of Olympus, and (oh) Keyblade transformations in past games. KH3 is explicitly not doing anything original in this regard; it's building on existing mechanics from previous games and expanding their range of applications in order to assert Sora's development as Keyblade wielder who now has a wealth of experience and resources to draw upon. Given the swiftness and flexibility of movement we've been led to expect from KH3, I imagine dual wielding (originally implemented using console hardware from two generations ago) would be more impressive, not less.

I was not ready for today. The two forms look great. This doesn't make sense, but I like the subtlety of the forms is nice. I guess I mean that the colors don't pop out like in KH2. It really looks nice. I'm very interested in seeing what Guard Form is about. Assuming there's more to than being linked keyblade transformations.

1) I've never been satisfied with this line of reasoning as far as the internal story is concerned-- I realize Nomura is word of God here, but everything doesn't have to be so convenient. In game, Sora only dual wields while in a Drive Form. If Ven's heart was all he needed, he could have dual wielded the minute he stepped outside of the sleeping pod. Even if we consider that the Faeries helped him awaken that ability somehow (which is pretty cool, admittedly), he still should have been able to dual wield in his regular KH2 outfit, just as Roxas could summon Ven's Keyblade without the use of a single Drive Form. Consider also that Sora doesn't dual wield once over the course of DDD. Ven's heart still resides within him: the missing factors are Donald, Goofy and other human party members.
2) Nomura has also stated the main requirement for dual wielding is the presence of two hearts, and I was concentrating on that. Roxas needed Ven's heart to dual wield because he doesn't have the ability to connect with others in the way Sora does; I would make the case that Sora could continue to dual wield after giving Ven his heart back because he can still engage Drive Forms and draw on the strength of his friends' hearts. I think that would further emphasize his unique quality as a character: he inspires others to lend him their light and that makes him stronger in turn.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, I hope that Drive Forms being tied to transformations means Keyblade transformations are limited to Drive Forms. That would be ideal, in my opinion.

Also, weren't Drive Forms in III actually seen at the II.5 launch event? I seem to recall people saying they saw Sora in a blue outfit with actual wings, or something like that?

I don't know about being able to dual-wield two keyblades, but if we can transform one into two guns, it's fairly likely that we could transform one into two blades.

I think you spoke to my main contention; Nomura has avenues through which he can justify Sora's continued dual wielding. I'm prone to nitpick at the details but, hey, as long as it gets the job done.

Limit Form didn't use up party members (I believe the in-universe reasoning was that Sora was drawing on strength from friends "far away" or some such) so there is a kind of precedent.

Drive forms are coming back!? I've only heard rumors of drive forms coming back but I didn't think actually add them in this came. So in KH3 we'll have Shot-Locks, Drive forms, Flow motions, attraction flow/Rides and other things..my god Enix don't kill me man. Since the new drive forms seem to be weapon based can I expect a Scythe form?

But in all seriousness, we got a Word of God reason as to why Sora CAN dual-wield, but my guess as to why he doesn't do so without changing forms is because it's just not his style. Swinging around weapons in each hand can get really tiring, and we can guess that Sora's been using that two-handed crouching stance since he was a very young kid. Old habits and muscle memory. Better to stick with what you know, especially if your life depends on it, right? (And although this is a fantasy game, from what I've read, dual wielding two fully-sized swords in real life is both highly impractical and dangerous. It's usually better to just go with a shield instead, a small dagger, or even nothing at all.)
Dual wielding happens with drive forms because they boost Sora's abilities, making two Keyblades not only viable but actually practical in some cases. Plus they're temporary.
As for the Xemnas fight, he dual-wielded because it gave him an advantage he desperately needed at that very moment. He always has this ability, drive forms or not, just not a good reason to exploit it all the time.
Only place left that we haven't been to now is Thebes.
BBS was just a massive tease with that.Who thought it was a good idea to have the "Town Near Thebes" be one small room,should have had at least 3/4 extra rooms to explore.
I dunno we saw Olympus shield form without guard form before. I suspect that guard form just makes Sora's combos into something more defensive like the ability to parry and counterattack everything or maybe even grants him super armor so he can combo even while being hurt. It might also incorporate the different block abilities in days like giving him auto block or causing enemies to like freeze when being blocked. I think the reason they incorporated the Olympus blade in it is because much like how certain keyblades were better on certain forms, like bond of flame on final form the same holds true here. The Olympus shield form blade probably simply meshes best with guard form...also they are trying to avoid spoilers so it just makes sense to show off that blade.
Likewise on the subject of dual wielding I figure that is what kingdom key's transformation will be since they have been avoiding showing Sora with his most iconic keyblade. Just sorta makes sense to me given dual wielding was an early game ability in KH2. Figure it hold true here the kingdom key transform into two swords giving Sora dual wielding which would afford him longer faster combos off the bat until you get some of the bigger/better transformations that have more variety and change up the play style more drastically. Of course that is just my assumption but I dunno what else the kingdom key would really become that work in the early game without overwhelming players.
I hope we get an epic battle with the Cyclopes in Thebes. I agree that the small room in BBS was misleading/disappointing.
I wonder if all the Drive Forms will have the KH2 clothing, I think that'd be appropriate. Although, that second image doesn't look like it has the baggier pants, but it's at a weird angle so I can't tell exactly.

they have similar baggage as well when looked at side by side. i think it might just be the angle + movement that might make them seem baggier.

This reminds me of someone on Youtube saying that Aqua's hair looks longer in 0.2.
I mean, yeah, maybe his pants look a little baggier, but then again, they don't look as baggy as in KH2 so it doesn't really need to mean anything. xD
Aqua's hair in the 0.2 opening looks like blue sour gummi strips and I really want to bite just one strand...but I know it's a lie her hair is just hair no matter how much it looks like candy. Just like crisco looks like cream but tastes and smells awful in reality...

You can't ask for Drive Forms to be balanced while at the same time wanting it's main drawbacks (Party member requirements, Anti-Form) to be removed.

It's not my fault the visual style they are using makes the character hair look more like gummi candy than actual hair...They got nice soft faces finally after all that plastic I was hoping that the hair would look softer to. They really just need to make the strands thinner... Also I've no idea to what that is a reference to. It looks like crisis core?

Whole KH2 worlds could fit into that 1 shot.
I have a feeling that we may get a Final Fantasy XV situation in which some areas of the world are expansive and other are really linear. I feel as though Mount Olympus will be far more linear than the mortal realm. Sure, it'll be explorable but not anywhere as expansive.

That's exactly what I'd like. I enjoy fighting with party members much more than Drive Forms, but KH2 made party members ineffectual and irrelevant (and they’re mostly Disney characters, what a surprise) for the sake of Drive Forms. I’d like Anti-Form gone, too, though I’d rather they keep it and get rid of the party member requirements if getting rid of both wasn’t an option. Of course I'd have preferred no Drive Forms at all, but...
Preach. I feel like there could hopefully be some new detriments to Drive Forms they can introduce lol. But yeah I can honestly live with Anti-Form as long as they leave the Party Members alone this time.
