Square Enix has just revealed that a KINGDOM HEARTS 3 Sora Play Arts Kai is now up for preorder from their online store! The figure will be releasing on January 30, 2017 and costs $149.99.
Update: KH3 Sora PAK will be released in Japan on November 6, 2016 for 15,240 yen. Preorder it now on the SE online store!
From the latest chapter in the globally beloved KINGDOM HEARTS series by Disney and Square Enix, KINGDOM HEARTS III, the protagonist Sora now makes an appearance to the Play Arts Kai action figure line!
Accompanying the improvements in the graphic technology of the game, our designers have paid close attention to expressing the minute details in the sculptwork of Sora in his slightly more mature and grown-up figure.
The costume design is based on the look of Sora’s KINGDOM HEARTS II outfit, with the predominantly red and black color scheme of KINGDOM HEARTS 3D: DREAM DROP DISTANCE.
He is highly poseable due to the utilization of flexible materials. The Keyblade that can change form into a double crossbow – which could be called the trademark of this title — is also included as an accessory part. With all these features and more, this figure is certainly an eagerly awaited collector’s item for fans.

I can't see anyone from 2.8 being worth a Play Art. There's Aqua & Terra but they've denied them Play Arts for 6 years now I really doubt that'll happen.
Then I can't see it worth producing 5 different figures for the Foretellers since 1) they're expensive to buy so people would pick and choose, 2) they might not move stock because of it.

That's a brilliant merchandising idea. Square Enix should consider making that a thing. Staying relevant to topic, this figure has made me grow warm to Sora's new outfit.

While one certainly has to admit the figure itself looks pretty awesome I can't really say to be overly excited about the like 10.000th variation of Sora.

I just started collecting Play Arts Kai figures earlier this year. Ugh, this is exactly why I should have never started. They will be the death of my wallet. Even though I'm not gagging for the keyblade / gun-blade designs, the bastard still looks great~
Having bought PAKs in the past, this price tag is kind of a slap in the face 'cause I know that it's inflated.

This is genius. Pure genius! I love how he has the transformed Keyblade pistols instead of the Keyblade itself for once! It's original, and suits what we've seen of KHIII very well. Edit: I just now saw that it also comes with the Keyblade version of the pistols. Ignore me. My excitement got the better of me, and I typed this before seriously looking at all the images.
You've also gotta love how one of the poses our stupid hero son's in matches the KHIII!Sora render in the header here.
Oh, Sora... You're so good looking in KHIII. I remember when Nomura said that in FFVIII, he was trying to make Rinoa seem "cute" with the new graphics, by giving her some quirks, so that her beauty wouldn't be overwhelming and the main focus for players...
I think that Nomura should maybe still be thinking like that, I lie to myself, but with the boy characters that girl gamers are going to have a hard time focusing on other things with. LOL.
But what an amazing thing to come home to, after going to the doctor and finding out I may or may not have a tick right now. It's made my crummy day a whole lot better, that's for sure!

As someone who isn't greatly into collecting figures or merchandise, I wonder this as well, especially considering that we're getting the games family close to around the same time now anyway. It's quite puzzling to me.

If not, SE are just dicks? (They really aren't)
I think the first is more realistic. Like import sites get away with it because they usually operate by housing the products in the country of origin and ship out direct from there whereas SE is shipping them over to sell from their North American warehouse.
That is when you have to deal with international trade laws and stuff.

I'd imagine this one to be pretty expensive but damn does it look awesome.
On a side note this depiction of the wing being as long as Sephy is tall would actually mean it is (technically) big enough to truly allow him to fly with it if there would be a second one for balance.
(Of course I know that in actuality in the FFVII-verse he can fly because of magic).

Depends how you treat it, i would recommend to be careful.
I would love to have this figure to create Stop Motion Videos with it.

Depends on how hard you "play with this." The Play Arts Kai line is much sturdier than the Play Arts line, but I'm sure you could break it if you exert too much force on a joint that, while it may look like it, isn't supposed to move that way.
The small accessories are much easier to break but thankfully this figure doesn't look like it comes with any small, flimsy accessories (I'm looking at you Roxas Sea Salt Ice Cream...).
On a side note, Amiami now has the Unchained X and Lea's Keyblade Keychain available for pre-order (also cheaper than SE Store JP), so while shipping may be $20, if you order a bunch of stuff, you'll end up saving on shipping from multiple sites.

Technically no, but SE doesn't tend to make many runs of its figures. For example, I don't believe the 2014 Dream Drop Distance or 2015 KH2 figures (Sora, Roxas) are being made anymore, they're not available for purchase directly from Square Enix. After that, you should be able to find the figure(s) on a secondary site (ex. Amazon, eBay) fairly easily.
The only "official" LE figure so far has been the Final Form Sora (LE999), although the Limit Form Sora was pretty limited as well.

I know there's a lot of Disney merch out there already, but I wish it was more represented in the Kingdom Hearts brand; it is half the game after all. That's why I enjoyed the buddy packs of the Mirage figures, though the scale on those were a bit weird.

And they better be more durable than the old ones, I have KH2 Sora and Kairi and one of them broke in a week, and for the other one the arm joint was already so loose that it broke off when I took it out of the package.

From what I surmise, the Mirage figures didn't sell very well, only further shaking Disney's belief in Kingdom Hearts being a viable merchandise brand (hence why Disney didn't start re-licensing Kingdom Hearts for merchandise until 2009 with Hot Topic and then 2011 with their own merchandise).
That being said, I do quite like the Mirage figures, they're much bigger those most child's toys nowadays and some of them (Darkside) are so detailed and spotlight characters who get so little attention because others, named "Sora," take all of it.
