First Appearance: KINGDOM HEARTS (2002) The latest heir to the throne of Pride Rock, Simba believed that he was the one responsible for the loss of his father, Mufasa, to a wildebeest stampede, and the guilt has haunted him ever since. He fled his home and lived in self-exile with newfound friends Timon and Pumbaa, but he soon learns that even the ‘no worry' principle of Hakuna Matata cannot erase the past. Years later, Simba has to find the courage to face his fears once Sora, Donald, Goofy and Nala come seeking his help in overthrowing Scar. Initially determined to shy away from his duty, Simba gains the confidence he needs from Mufasa's spirit, and eventually heads a confrontation with Scar atop Pride Rock. Upon discovering that he was not the one who caused Mufasa's death, he defeats his uncle in a fierce duel, and reclaims his rightful position of king of the Pride Lands. Psychological scars are not so easily healed however. Pressured to live up to his father's reputation, Simba becomes plagued by doubts and insecurities about his own reign, causing even his loyal subjects to question his credibility as their leader. These negative feelings result in the manifestation of Scar's ghosts. It takes much encouragement from his friends to convince him that he does not need to compare himself with Mufasa, thus freeing him to walk his own path after he helps defeat the Groundshaker Heartless. |
